AI adoption is having its most pronounced impacts on entry-level and junior employees in highly digitalised sectors, Department of Finance says. Ireland’s labour market is “particularly exposed” to artificial intelligence (AI), and younger workers in highly digitised sectors are the most at risk group, the Department of Finance has warned. Due to the make-up of the Irish economy, it may be “among the first” advanced economies where early AI labour market impacts become measurable. At the same time, the rate of growth in AI skills demand in Ireland “has been striking”. “AI-related labour market adjustments have occurred mainly through changes in hiring and entry, rather than through the displacement of existing workers,” the department said.

The Seattle Seahawks have officially been put up for sale, with many anticipating that the Super Bowl champions could set a record for the cost of a sports franchise. Allen's sister, Jody, has led the Seahawks and the NBA team he owned, the Portland Trail Blazers, since his death. Before the recent Super Bowl success for the Seahawks, Sportico gave the franchise an estimated value of $6.59bn. But after winning February's Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, it is much harder to predict what they might sell for. Speaking before the Super Bowl, the eventual MVP running back Kenneth Walker said he hadn't ever seen her before.

Following the publication of farming sentiments surrounding bovine Tuberculosis (bTB), the ICMSA has said its findings were obvious. Deputy president of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA), Eamon Carroll, has said the latest research from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has highlighted problems that “have been obvious for decades,” regarding the sentiments surrounding the bTB programme. “The only people in this new regime with fixed targets are the farmers, who are also the only ones who suffer financial loss. We think that the same degree of compliance and time-limited targets should have been applied to all stakeholders. As it is – and as usual – the farmers are carrying everyone else,” concluded Mr Carroll.

The Government on Monday announced an initiative to financially support up to four new flour mills in Ireland. The initiative will create a capacity of between 60,000 and 80,000 tons per annum for new flour mills. Mr Burke said that "if we get three or four flour mills nationally, that will be a huge achievement".

Former England, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool star Paul Stewart has given his most harrowing account yet of the sickening abuse he suffered as a boy at the hands of a paedophile football coach. 'I'm thinking he must know what he's on about because he's the coach and I trusted him. If he's not outside school, he's sat on the sofa when I got back like a long lost uncle. 'From that day, I was sexually and physically abused every day of my life for four years. 'My disciplinary record was shocking but I didn't understand why, I didn't know it was because all this had happened to me as a child.

Data centres accounted for more than one-fifth of Irish electricity usage in 2024, the Central Statistics Office found. Photograph: Naoise CulhaneIn the Microsoft data centre campus on the outskirts of Dublin, the data halls of 13 centres are voraciously devouring vast amounts of electricity. The consumption of electricity by data centres had soared in recent years; they used more electricity in 2024 than every home in an Irish city or town. The electrical plant room at Microsoft’s Grange Castle data centre campus in west Dublin. But more data centres means more demand for electricity and the strains that led to the moratorium are still showing.

Continuity is usually the game of the game for Andy Farrell, but after making six changes to his team for last weekend’s 20-13 win over Italy, and getting a positive response from the majority of players he brought in, the Ireland head coach now has some big selection decisions to make for Saturday’s tough test at Twickenham (2.10).

Around 80% of flour in Ireland is imported from the UK each year, estimated to be around 240,000 tonnes. The new mills, when set up, would create the capacity for the production of up to 80,000 tonnes of flour. Mr Burke said that after Brexit, the cost of importing flour to Ireland had increased by 10 million euros, as it mainly imports the product from the UK. He said if more mills were set up in Ireland, this would “encourage” more farmers to grow and mill wheat. Minister of State at the Department of Finance Robert Troy said the scheme would benefit small, artisan bakeries such as Bread 41.

Dr Ebun Joseph said the country 'is experiencing a visible rise in far-right activity, racist rhetoric, and racially motivated attacks'. Rising levels of racism and hate are not being tackled with the energy needed to “meet the scale and urgency” of the problem, Ireland’s special rapporteur on racial equality has said. Dr Ebun Joseph, in her first report to the Oireachtas, which was published on Wednesday, said tackling racism “is more critical now than ever”. In terms of outcomes in employment and education, Irish Travellers suffer the worst discrimination, she says, with an unemployment rate of 61 per cent – eight times the national average. Black or black Irish people have a 16 per cent unemployment rate – double the national average, and Arab communities have an unemployment rate of 21 per cent.
