Vivienne ClarkeMinister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue is to introduce regulations in the coming months to ban the use of electric dog collars. The move follows months of “significant consultation” on this serious welfare issue, he told RTÉ radio’s Today Show. The regulations will not have an effect on electric fences as animals can avoid them. The target is electric shock collars which can be used on dogs and cats to control their behaviour and in some circumstances can be used for training. However, people who already have remote controlled electric collars on their animals will not be required to remove them.

Manchester United humiliated after thumping Palace winBy George Sessions, PAA Michael Olise masterclass helped Crystal Palace complete a first ever Premier League double over Manchester United and inflict further misery on Erik ten Hag’s team with a 4-0 drubbing in south London. Injury-hit United have won only two of their last 10 league matches and could be set for a lowest ever Premier League finish. Two more Olise efforts were repelled, one accidentally by his team-mate Mateta before Andre Onana saved after another fine Palace move. United had to wait until the 51st minute to have their first shot on target, but Antony’s 22-yard curler was routine for Henderson. Those fleeting forays for United only momentarily interrupted the Olise show as his skill should have resulted in a third for Palace, but Eze curled wide.

Peter Hebblethwaite repeatedly told MPs on the Business and Trade Committee that P&O's workers were not being exploited, while resisting calls for an independent investigation into the company's employment practices. The chief executive, who admitted he could not live on £4.87 per hour, also revealed he earned £508,000 including a bonus of £183,000 last year. Mr Hebblethwaite said: "We are paying considerably ahead of the international minimum standard. We believe that it is right that as an international business operating in international waters, we should be governed by international law." Mr Hebblethwaite's appearance before MPs came two years after P&O Ferries fired 786 of its staff and replaced them with low-paid workers who are employed by an external crewing agency.

Alexander, 33, will sing his dance-infused track Dizzy shortly after the first four competitors take to the stage. Bambie will be hoping that they will not be another Irish entrant that fails to make the finals of the contest. Ireland and Sweden are level for the most wins in the contest’s history, at seven each, following Swedish singer Loreen triumphing at Liverpool. They also have never missed a grand final, and nine of their 14 entries have finished in the top 10. There is not expected to be protests until later in the week, when Israel’s Eden Golan performs Hurricane at the second semi-final on Thursday.

After the shambolic local election results, the Tories’ remaining best hope of shifting the goalposts is interest rate cuts. Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt have no direct control over interest rates. Tomorrow, when the MPC sits down for its session, governor Andrew Bailey can show leadership. This gives the Bank the choice to lead the way down from higher borrowing costs. He is just one vote on a nine-member committee where the hawks need to be brought down from the summit.
