Neville Southall, who appeared at No8 on Carragher's list despite being almost 34 and past his brilliant best when the Premier League launched, was quick to disagree. Since then, top-flight English goalkeepers have become seriously endangered. David Seaman was the only Englishman included in Jamie Carragher's all-time top 10 Premier League goalkeepers listOnly three played in the latest Premier League fixtures. The inaugural Premier League season of 1992/93 featured 28 different English goalkeepers who made 571 appearances between them. Despite the weaker outlook for the long-term strength of the economy, Irish consumer sentiment improved marginally during February, the fourth month of increases in a row. The Credit Union Irish consumer sentiment survey is conducted in association with Core Research on a sample of a 1,000 Irish adults. While the gains in consumer sentiment have been relatively limited in recent months, they have proven enough to bring the index to an eleven-month high in February. Having dodged another bullet at home to Italy, the game against England last Saturday was something of a defining occasion. With two home games to finish, against Wales and Scotland, a top-half finish beckons, even if the title proves beyond their reach. Alongside 73 points and nine tries conceded in their past two defeats, against Scotland and Ireland inside eight days. Among other things it reflected the widening gap between the good game England are talking and the overly predictable, flawed one they are actually playing. Unfortunately, they are also conceding more than six tries per game on average, which is not going to win many Tests.

Well before Sunday’s closing ceremony at the Roman amphitheatre in Verona, itself a 2,000-year-old statement of longevity, something about the 2026 Winter Olympics felt different. The four Irish athletes who qualified made for our smallest representation since the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where the team also numbered four. Ben Lynch finished eighth in the Winter Olympic freeski halfpipe final after becoming the first Irish skier ever to qualify for a Winter Olympics final. Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan competes in the men’s figure skating free skate program during the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
