Nearly 400 years ago the Dutch owned what is now New York. They called it — not very originally — New Amsterdam and created a trading post that focused on beaver fur, which was a popular product for the making of hats. Their rule of the trading post at the mouth of the Hudson River lasted about 40 years and after war with England they gave up their rights to New Amsterdam. Reminders of the brief Dutch colony are dotted around New York, the Hudson River being one — named after an English navigator paid by the Dutch East India Company to explore the area — and Nassau County, where eight matches in this year’s T20 World Cup are being played. It is named after a prominent 17th century Dutch family.

Another former Autonomy finance executive, Stephen Chamberlain, faced fraud charges alongside Lynch during the complex trial. Another former HP CEO, Leo Apotheker, who negotiated the Autonomy deal, was called to the stand by federal prosecutors to outline Lynch’s alleged misconduct.

Junior Cycle Irish students were mostly relieved with straightforward higher and ordinary level papers, teachers have said. Both Ms Dolan and Ms Donnellan said that the ordinary T2 level papers were fair, although Ms Donnellan said that a question about inviting friends to see the actor Paul Mescal may have been challenging for some. “The paper went off without a hitch,” said Ms Dolan. “The language used was student friendly and nothing different to what has been seen on past and sample papers. “Personally, I would love to see more focus on the oral element in junior cycle, as it can make Irish more accessible as a living language,” she said.

The Government has forecast that domestic demand will grow 1.9% for 2024 as a whole and 2.3% in 2025 after growing just 0.5% last year. GDP, which is still the measure used to calculate Ireland's share of activity across the eurozone, expanded by 0.9% in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2023.

Globally, the planet is continuing to break temperature records, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. Both made more severe by human influences of climate change.
