The United States, China, Great Britain, and France lead the Gracenote Virtual Medal Table forecast for next month’s Games. China is projected to finish second on total medals but should challenge the United States for first place on gold medals. Gold medals could be significantly down though as the British team is projected to win 14 golds in Paris. Host nation France should sharply increase its overall medal haul in comparison to the 33 total medals won in Tokyo. Australia is expected to be fifth on the total medal table.

The freshly-elected Mayor of Galway City Peter Keane has set his priorities for the year ahead as he explained the traffic issue will be the city’s main challenge. Galway City West Councillor and Fianna Fáil politician Peter Keane was elected to the role at the first meeting of the new City Council on Friday, June 21, while Labour Councillor Níall McNelis was elected Deputy Mayor. Mayor Keane told the Irish Independent he will use his experience to lead the Council to the best of his ability. It is singularly the biggest challenge in Galway City, not just now but over the last five or ten years. Councillor McNelis and myself were first elected to Galway City Council in 2009, on the same day.

Ireland’s first President Dr. Douglas Hyde was inaugurated as the first President of Ireland on this day, June 25th in 1938. Hyde, whose nom de plume was “An Craoibhin Aoibhinn” was the first President of Ireland from June 25th, 1938 to June 24th, 1945. He was born on January 17th, 1860, in Castlerea and grew up in Frenchpark. He was co-founder and First President (1893-1915) of the Gaelic League, the national movement for the revival of the Irish language. He died on July 12th, 1949 and was buried at Portahard, Frenchpark.

People in Ireland receive a higher dose of radiation than the average European due to exposure to radon, a major cause of lung cancer, a new study has found. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) today published a new assessment of the average radiation doses received by the Irish population. The ‘Ionising Radiation – National Dose Report’ assessed the radiation exposure over the last five years received from air, medical exposures, environmental exposures and diet. Up to 350 new cases of lung cancer in Ireland can be attributed to exposure to radon each year. As part of the assessment, HIQA reviewed radiation exposure to patients, finding that the average amount of radiation from medical exposure has decreased.

For a country that traditionally spoke about a lack of natural resources, Ireland sits on vast offshore wind energy potential. Floating offshore wind is an emerging technology, while fixed offshore wind is a more mature technology. This site will double the European capacity in floating offshore wind when completed, but more importantly indicates the near commercial viability of floating offshore wind and less reliance on public financial support. Scotland has major plans for floating offshore wind with its Offshore Win-Net-Zero roadmap speaking of 5GWs by 2030. The requirements for fixed offshore wind and floating offshore wind are different.
