‌Baroness Hayman said the Government is working to break the link between domestic abuse and violence or threats against animals. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has commissioned research into the link between animal abuse. And work is being carried out to train vets to spot signs of animal abuse that could be linked to domestic violence and coersion. In October a grim study by the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV) found thousands of cases where abusers used pets to control their victims. Campaigners warn that under current law, the Domestic Abuse Act does not explicitly consider pet abuse as a form of coercive control.

Media group Axel Springer has agreed to buy the UK’s Telegraph newspaper group for £575 million (€663 million) in a move that will scupper the proposed acquisition of the group by the Daily Mail, said people briefed about the matter. The deal will result in one of the UK’s oldest newspapers, which has strong links with the British establishment and Conservative Party, ending up in German ownership. However, in recent days the German publisher started negotiating a deal on its own with RedBird IMI, the US-Emirati group that controlled the conservative newspaper group, excluding Efune. It was never allowed to convert the debt it acquired from Lloyds into equity, which is why it then needed to sell this on to Daily Mail owner Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT). However, the deal still faces scrutiny from media watchdog Ofcom and the UK’s competition and markets authority.

When you’re not going after something, there’s a danger of old and bad habits setting in. Last summer and how sensationally it concluded meant Tipp had no need to go after the 2026 League. It's not good,” 2001 All-Ireland winning captain Tommy Dunne said of slipping into a losing habit. “Cathal O’Reilly, notwithstanding the Limerick game, has made a pretty positive start in the Tipp senior set-up. For that reason, he'd be very disappointed with the Limerick game as a lot of lads got in.”

Photograph: Atta Kenare/AFP/Getty ImagesUS president Donald Trump has demanded a say in picking Iran’s next leader despite scant signs that the regime is losing its grip in the face of a relentless US and Israeli air campaign. The pounding of regime targets across Iran by US and Israeli fighter jets continued apace on day six of the Middle East war as the conflict continued to widen. The attack comes in spite of calls from world leaders including Macron urging Israel not to expand the war into Lebanon. There was growing anger in Lebanon against Hizbullah for dragging the country into the war by firing rockets at Israel on Monday. Even though the US has refrained from listing regime change as an aim of the war, Trump said on Thursday he needs to be personally involved in selecting Iran’s next leader, just as he was in Venezuela.

Donald Trump delivers a video address on social media announcing the US and Israeli attack on Iran on February 28thIn 2007, John McCain, then seeking the Republican Party nomination for the United States presidency, sang “bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” to the tune of the Beach Boys’ hit version of Barbara Ann at a campaign event in South Carolina. In 2019, political scientist Marco Overhaus said: “Trump’s Iran policy looks like a pressure cooker without a release valve.” Now the cooker has exploded. There was a time when Iranian nationalists, dealing with the imperialism of Britain and of Russia, captured the Irish nationalist imagination. The Iranian nationalist press reciprocated by embracing the nationalist martyrdom of Roger Casement, executed after the 1916 Rising. What struck her, in looking at centuries of Iranian history, was “the propensity of Iranians to mount mass movements that challenge, often successfully, the powers that be”.

The rationale was a decision by the Supreme Court that the IRA activities amounted to a “political offence”, as described in the 1965 Extradition Act. This state of affairs infuriated British authorities, but what is not as widely known is that the Irish definition of a “political offence” was hotly contested by some members of the Supreme Court. The court’s approach to the issue is detailed in a book by the editor of The Irish Times, Ruadhán Mac Cormaic, The Supreme Court. The ultimate responsibility for closing the “political offence” loophole for IRA activities lay with the political system. He came up with a new definition of a political offence as being involved “in what reasonable, civilised people would regard as political activity”.
