Air France, for example, cancelled flights to and from Dubai and Riyads until March 7, and to and from Tel Aviv and Beirut until March 9. Dubai International Airport was closed (Altaf Qadri/AP)Any travel to destinations rated ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-Essential Travel’ will likely invalidate travel insurance and overseas medical cover. The rights of passengers in the event of cancelled or delayed flights are set out under EU Regulation 261/2014. They apply to flights within the EU, but also flights arriving into or departing from the EU on both EU or non-EU airlines. Adding travel disruption cover to your travel insurance policy (well in advance of travel) can also provide additional cover for expenses and accommodation (see below).

ALTHOUGH our sleep patterns can change as we get older, the amount of sleep we need remains unchanged: Seven to nine hours a night. However, this target can be difficult to achieve, as shifting sleep patterns — combined with the natural effects of ageing — can hamper sleep quality. It also helps to understand that sleep patterns will change as you get older, says health scientist and sleep coach Tom Coleman. As a result, we experience less deep sleep.”Deep sleep is where all the physical restoration happens, but light sleep is just as important for health, says Coleman: “Light sleep is where all the cognitive restoration, the emotional restoration, the brain cleaning happens. Don’t undervalue light sleep, it is good for your brain.”However, if you spend most of your night in light sleep, your sleep can be more easily disturbed.

Photo: ReutersThe US government won’t make a decision on potential retaliatory action against Irish airlines because of the passenger cap at Dublin Airport until at least April 6. It could spare any immediate blushes for Taoiseach Micheál Martin when he visits the White House this month for St Patrick’s Day. Lobby group Airlines for America (A4A) has been pushing the US Department of Transportation to curtail or suspend the rights of Irish carriers to operate between Dublin Airport and US destinations because of the cap. Last year, Dublin Airport handled 36.4 million passengers and will handle more this year. A4A has called on the Irish government to ensure that legislation to remove the cap at Dublin Airport is removed by the end of next month, before the EU court makes its ruling.
