Two employees of a jewellery chain have been arrested for stealing ornaments worth over ₹1.5 crore from the stores where they worked. The Barrackpore store is under the Titagarh police station area. Rajeev Ramanan, who worked at the Kankurgachhi store, and Kunal Chakraborty, of the Barrackpore store, have been arrested, said an officer. While Ramanan is accused of stealing 684gm of gold jewellery, worth ₹98 lakh, and Chakraborty allegedly stole 372gm, worth ₹61 lakh, he said. They traced CCTV footage, among other things, to link the alleged theft to the two accused, the sources said.

NEW DELHI: Taking note of inadequate implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) in providing titles to forest dwellers, the tribal affairs ministry has told states to conduct regular meetings at the sub-divisional, district, and state levels to expedite the process of granting titles and submit quarterly reports. Ranjan Chopra, secretary for the ministry, has written a letter to the states, stating that regular meetings are intended to establish a strong mechanism to expedite the resolution of pending claims related to implementation of FRA. The FRA of 2006 grants legal rights to forest-dwelling tribal communities and traditional residents over the lands and forests they have inhabited for generations. The law outlines a systematic step-by-step process—at local, district, and state levels—to ensure that forest rights are recognised, verified, approved, and monitored fairly.

The announcement came hours after Cuba said its soldiers killed four people and wounded six others aboard a Florida-registered speed boat that had entered Cuban waters and opened fire on the soldiers first, injuring one Cuban officer. The Associated Press was not immediately able to independently verify that information. Cuba's government said it obtained the details about the passengers aboard the boat from the suspects detained following the shootout. "The majority of the facts being publicly reported are those by the information provided by the Cubans. "The Cuban government cannot be trusted, and we will do everything in our power to hold these communists accountable," he wrote on X.

Following the announcement, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had extended the state’s support to establish a global capability centre in Bengal.

India’s solar manufacturing sector faces fresh headwinds after the United States imposed a steep preliminary countervailing duty (CVD) of 125.87 per cent onimports of certain Indian solar products, citing unfair subsidies. The new duties come amid a sharp rise in Indian solar exports to the US, which increased to $792.6 million in 2024 from $83.86 million in 2022. Crisil Intelligence said the US accounts for more than 95 per cent of India’s solar cell and module exports. Crisil director Sehul Bhatt said modules from India could become at least 30 per cent more expensive than US-made modules. Waaree Energies fell 10.47 per cent, Premier Energies 6.27 per cent, Vikram Solar 5.45 per cent on the BSE.
