Ethiopian star runner Lamecha Girma exited the track on a stretcher after taking a hard fall while attempting to clear a barrier on the backside of the final lap in Wednesday’s 3000m men’s steeplechase. The 23-year-old was accelerating down the back straightaway as he leaped to clear the hurdle while competitors were on his right and left. Girma appeared to clip the barrier with his trailing right knee and fell directly onto his upper body. South African police have rescued 90 Ethiopian migrants being held against their will at a property in Johannesburg. The migrants had been illegally trafficked from Ethiopia and, according to the police, were found packed into small rooms and locked up. The discovery validates the concerns of Interpol and other authorities who have spoken out against the trafficking of Ethiopian migrants through southern African countries, often under dangerous conditions. Previous incidents include the 2020 discovery of 64 dead Ethiopians in a freight container in Mozambique and the 2022 findings of mass graves in Malawi and Zambia containing Ethiopian migrants. Meanwhile, the rescue operation also resulted in the arrest of two individuals who the police intend to charge with kidnapping and human trafficking.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), on Tuesday, lauded the judiciary for upholding justice and nullifying the purported sale of Nigeria Air to Ethiopian Airlines. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High had on Monday, declared the sale of Nigeria Air to Ethiopian Airlines, as null and void. He said the process was against the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission Act, ICAQ Convention, Civil Aviation Act, Public Procurement Act, Concession Regulatory Commission (Est.) It added that Ethiopian Airlines was incompetent to bid for shares in Nigeria Air and commence business accordingly. The judgment ordered the immediate revocation and cancellation of the Air Transport License issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to the Nigeria Air Ltd.
