The Ethiopian government said Tuesday it will investigate a report by a human rights group of killings of hundreds its nationals at the Yemen-Saudi border. The New York-based group Human Rights Watch released a report on Monday citing eyewitness accounts of attacks by border guards in Saudi Arabia using machine guns and mortars on unarmed Ethiopians trying to cross into the kingdom from Yemen. The United Nations has already questioned Saudi Arabia about its troops opening fire on migrants in an escalating pattern of attacks along its southern border with war-torn Yemen. About 750,000 Ethiopians live in Saudi Arabia, with as many as 450,000 likely having entered without authorization, according to 2022 statistics from the International Organization for Migration. Saudi Arabia, struggling with youth unemployment, has been sending thousands back to Ethiopia in concert with the Ethiopian government.

Defence Minister Abraham Belay's comments are the government's clearest to date on its plans for the disputed territory, fertile farmlands officially known as Western Tigray where some of the most intense fighting of the war took place. Most of those who fled the disputed area identify as Tigrayan, while the territory is currently governed by Amhara forces and administrators. The federal constitution, which was drafted by a former Tigrayan-led federal administration in 1995, recognises the lands as belonging to Tigray. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the Tigray war, which ended with a peace deal between the government and Tigrayan leaders last November. Amhara nationalists complained they were not included in the negotiations and felt betrayed by the deal's stipulation that the status of the disputed lands be resolved in accordance with the 1995 constitution.

A Saudi official, communicating via email with Reuters, also refuted similar claims made by UN officials in 2022 that border guards had systematically killed migrants the previous year. Surviving migrants have come forward with distressing testimonies recounting alleged abuses at the hands of Saudi border guards. Currently, Saudi Arabia is hosting approximately 750,000 Ethiopian migrants, many of whom are seeking improved economic opportunities.

Senegal repatriated on Monday from Cape Verde some forty nationals who survived a crossing which was to take them to Europe and which cost the lives of around sixty migrants, AFP journalists noted. The survivors, all men, mostly young and rescued last week aboard a canoe off Cape Verde, were brought back to the country by a Senegalese military plane which landed at the end of the afternoon. These will be buried in Cape Verde, said the Minister Delegate for Senegalese Abroad Annette Seck Ndiaye. The decision was taken in consultation with the families, said the minister delegate, who had returned from Cape Verde with her compatriots, to journalists. One of the survivors remained in Cape Verde and is treated there "because his state of health did not allow him to make the trip", said the minister delegate.

The protestors accused authorities of racism and of not taking the case because it involved an Ethiopian victim. Rafael Adana, 4, died days after being critically injured in a hit-and-run in Netanya a few months ago. Following a brief investigation, police decided not to charge the driver, Carroll, with killing Adana and she was instead charged with the minor crime of neglect. The decision sparked outrage from Adana’s family and the Ethiopian community. A child was killed and the result is tragic, we will continue the fight until the solution is found," she added.

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is set to host a continental conference that aims to reflect on the growing debt tragedy of African countries and possible solutions. The 3rd edition of the African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD III) is scheduled to take place from 30th August to 1st September 2023.
