RIYADH, Aug 25 (APP):The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on Friday categorically rejected the Human Rights Watch’s recent report claiming an assault on the Ethiopian citizens while attempting to cross the Saudi-Yemeni border. “These allegations lack merit and are based on unreliable sources,” Saudi official sources said. The publication and dissemination of politicized and misleading report was part of ‘malicious media campaigns’, which were repeatedly launched with questionable motives, they added. Emphasizing KSA’s commitment to upholding human rights principles, they said that the law enforcement agencies within the Kingdom adhered to the human rights regulations outlined in local and international laws, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law. These individuals are treated in accordance with the Kingdom’s regulations, which are aligned with international human rights standards,” the sources clarified.

Addis Ababa (AFP) – The head of Ethiopia's violence-stricken region of Amhara, which the federal government has placed under a state of emergency, has stepped down, according to an official statement reported Friday. Tension in the northern region ratcheted up this year after the end of a devastating war in the neighbouring region of Tigray that also drew in fighters from Amhara. The move triggered protests by Amhara nationalists who said it would weaken their region. The situation in Amhara is impossible to verify on the ground, as the federal authorities restrict access to the region. The Amhara region is inhabited mostly by the Amhara people, the country's second most populous ethnic group.

The potential new members include three of the world’s biggest oil producers: Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran. South African officials pushed back against characterizations that BRICS was taking an anti-West turn under the influence of China and Russia. While Saudi Arabia had been touted as a likely new member, Iran’s inclusion wasn’t expected. Until recently, the inclusion of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE together in the same economic or political organization would have been unthinkable, as tensions escalated following the collapse of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal. But the UAE became the first to reengage diplomatically with Iran, and Saudi Arabia and Iran announced they had reached a separate détente in March, notably with the help of Chinese mediation.

The Walter Sisulu University and North-West University in South Africa unveiled the results of their preclinical trials for a combination vaccine against tuberculosis (TB) and Covid-19. Reflecting on the revolutionary nature of this vaccine, Prof Depfenhart shared: “DNA vaccines have incredible potential due to their stability and adaptability. The key deliverable of the study, which was carried out at the high-security biosafety laboratory (BSL3) of the preclinical imaging facility of the South African Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (SANuMeRI) housed at NECSA (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation), was survival. This novel approach, developed by Prof Depfenhart, could be groundbreaking and may well explain the vaccine’s notable efficacy against TB. Preparations for discussions with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) are underway to determine the requisite standards and protocols.

Protests erupted in Tel Aviv on Wednesday night over police and judicial incompetence following a hit and run that killed a four-year-old Ethiopian child in May. The Ethiopian community called out the government’s structural racism, saying authorities were being lenient towards the driver who killed Rafael Adana. A protester was also injured after jumping from a bridge in an effort to escape police who were chasing him. The protest drew the attention of prominent far-right Israeli politicians who focused on the stabbing of the officer rather than outrage pertaining to the child’s murder. The driver, an elderly woman, justified her hit-and-run by saying that she “didn’t feel” the car hitting anything.

The peace process has not halted sexual assaults on females in the region by alleged former combatants, according to the study. Researchers believe the number of rape cases sampled in the report is only a fraction of the assaults those that have actually occurred.
