The 1st Anti-Terrorism and Constitutional trial of the Federal High Court, which has been dealing with Abdi’s case, was scheduled for today to give a verdict on the case filed by the prosecutor. Among the individuals who have been asked to defend the case presented by the prosecutor included Abdi Mohammed who governed the Somali Region for eight years. The Federal High Court reached the decision that the defender, the former president of Somali Region, should “defend” this criminal case, according to his lawyer Eskindir. In today’s hearing, the Federal Prosecutor announced that apart from the main case against the defender, a verdict was also given on the “alternative case”. The Federal High Court adjourned the cases of the defendants until 13 November 2023.

Dashen Bank, one of Ethiopia's largest banks, has received a USD 40 million loan from the British International Investment (BII) and the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO). The loan will help Dashen Bank strengthen its export lending capabilities and support agricultural product exporters by facilitating the purchase of new machinery. The loan is in line with the new foreign exchange facilitation guidelines set by the National Bank of Ethiopia in 2021. Dashen Bank CEO Asfaw Alemu said that the loan would help to stimulate the market and attract more resources from international investors. Dashen Bank has a customer base of over 5 million and operates through more than 80 branches across Ethiopia.

ADDIS ABABA – Huawei Technologies launched the 2023/24 edition of its ICT Competition in Ethiopia on Monday, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Registration for the upcoming 8th Huawei ICT Competition will open in the first few days of September coinciding with the new Ethiopian academic year begins. The launch of the competition was announced during a ceremony organized to award the winners of the 7th Huawei ICT Competition 2023. More than 1500 students took part in the preliminary exam and 64 students progressed to the national competition. Eighteen students won the national ICT contest and went on to represent Ethiopia in the Huawei ICT competition in Africa.

British International Investment (BII) and FMO, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank, have jointly committed up to USD 20 million each to Dashen Bank, one of Ethiopia’s largest private banks. The USD 40 million loan aims to drive agricultural exports and provide much-needed foreign exchange in Ethiopia. BII and FMO are supporting Dashen Bank to bolster the country’s agriculture sector, which employs 80 percent of the population and contributes 39 percent to GDP. “We are pleased for achieving this historic milestone,” said Asfaw Alemu, CEO of Dashen Bank. The commitment makes BII and FMO among the first foreign institutions to provide long-term funding under Ethiopia’s bank intermediation directive issued in 2021.
