NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Climate change is “relentlessly eating away” at Africa’s economic progress and it’s time to have a global conversation about a carbon tax on polluters, Kenya’s president declared Tuesday as the first Africa Climate Summit got underway. He and other leaders urged reforms to the global financial structures that have left African nations paying about five times more to borrow money than others, worsening the debt crisis for many. Africa has more than 30 of the world’s most indebted countries, Kenya’s Cabinet secretary for the environment, Soipan Tuya, said. Africa’s GDP should be revalued for its assets, which include the world's second-largest rainforest and biodiversity, African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina said. “It is an African story, and I daresay it’s a global story, too.”___Follow AP’s coverage of the climate at https://apnews.com/climate-and-environment and of Africa at https://apnews.com/hub/africa

If you wish to understand the depth and breadth of Ethiopia’s troubles, I urge you to watch the below video prepared and posted by an independent foreign group. I commend those who had the courage to prepare and share such a powerful documentary at this critical time in Ethiopia’s long and distinguished history. The international community can no more afford to ignore the catastrophic situation unfolding in Ethiopia: a country where a delusional leader is constructing a palace that will cost it $15 billion while 20 million plus go hungry each day and while the country’s middle class is unable to meet daily necessities such as foods, water, shelter, health services and the like. d) Generations of Ethiopians will never forget the atrocities committed by the Abiy regime over the past 5 years. A demonstrator who sustained burns during a recent anti-racism protest by Israelis of Ethiopian descent has said that police ignored his pleas for medical treatment. Israeli officials thereafter began sending envoys to Ethiopia, who initiated the organized immigration, or aliyah, of people belonging to Ethiopia’s ancient and large Jewish minority, known as Beta Israel. AdvertisementThis culminated in the airlifting of thousands of Beta Israel Ethiopians in Operation Solomon in 1991. Other Beta Israel Ethiopian Israelis oppose immigration by Falasha, who they say lack an affinity to Judaism. Other scandals have concerned the treatment of Beta Israel, including a years-long secret refusal by Israel’s blood bank to take donations from any Israeli Ethiopians.

Rising tension in Ethiopia's Amhara region from sporadic fighting between the federal government and local militia groups, known as Fano, is causing shortages of goods and reducing health care services. Towns across the Amhara region have come to a standstill following the fighting. A health worker in Dembecha town, in the West Gojjam Zone, said federal troops had initially camped at the town's hospital for days, making it difficult for staff to provide health services. The Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency in the Amhara region in early August, restricting movement and transferring the region's administration to a military command post. In a briefing given September 1, Ethiopian Defense Force Field Marshall Berhanu Jula said the situation in the Amhara region is no longer posing a security threat.

Amnesty report says how Eritrean soldiers extrajudicially executed civilians and sexually enslaved women for months after a peace agreement last year. Eritrean troops allied with Ethiopia’s government have “committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity” in Tigray, rights group Amnesty International says. In a report released on Monday, Amnesty detailed how Eritrean soldiers extrajudicially executed civilians and sexually enslaved women for months after the signing of a peace agreement last year. “The serious violations documented in this report amount to war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity,” the rights watchdog said. During a rare news conference in Kenya earlier this year, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki dismissed accusations of rights abuses by Eritrean troops in Tigray as “fantasy”.

It highlights that the biggest polluting nations have failed to meet the climate and humanitarian funding needs of the East African countries, which are currently suffering from a climate-fueled hunger crisis. This is in stark contrast to the $53.3 billion East African nations say they need annually to meet the 2030 climate goals. In recent years, East African nations have faced one of the worst droughts in recorded history. The United Nations estimates that a staggering $8.74 billion is necessary to safeguard lives in East Africa. “At the heart of East Africa’s hunger crisis lies an abhorrent climate injustice,” stated N’zi-Hassane.

An easy drive via freeway from the 209, Berkeley offers a somewhat fun alternative to pleasant mixtures of food, fun, and shopping than you can find in born again downtowns such as Pleasanton, Livermore and Lodi. That’s because of the stunning views of San Francisco, the Bay, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate, and Berkeley below that can be seen from the panoramic vista from the hall’s deck. Time it with the sunset and you’ll see a view of The City and San Francisco Bay that will forever be etched into your mind. Crest the ridge line above Berkeley and you’ll find yourself taking in the most stunning overlooked attribute of the Bay Area — wilderness. The Members of parliament (MPs) of African countries are urged to seriously interrogate their executives to understand the magnitude and usage of the debt the executives borrow on behalf of their people. Reports show that because most of the African countries have misused the money they borrowed or allocated for unintended purposes, many African countries are currently experiencing debt distress. The problem is that most of the money borrowed by African leaders is not intended for the purpose the people are told. And we keep on borrowing, borrowing, and borrowing because the money is not producing what we expected it to be producing,” said Mozambique MP and Vice President of African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC). May be to be more polite it I should say mismanaged, a close word to say stollen…So fighting corruption is one way of controlling the debt money is being used in our continent.

By Catherine Nicholls(CNN) — The Eritrean Defense Forces committed war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity in Tigray, Ethiopia, immediately before and after signing a ceasefire last year, a new Amnesty International report has alleged.
