Eritrea has formally responded to the speech given by the Ethiopian Prime Minister regarding Ethiopia’s aspiration to gain access to the sea. In a brief statement released by the Ministry of Information on Monday, the Eritrean government expressed its lack of interest in “engaging in such channels and platforms” where discussions about sea access and related matters would take place. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed talked about the need for wider discussion in a televised speech broadcast on Friday night while addressing council members regarding Ethiopia’s desire to secure access to the sea. He emphasized that securing sea access for the country, given its significant population growth and strategic proximity to both the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, is a matter of vital importance. The Eritrean government commented, “Discourses – both actual and presumed – on water, access to the sea, and related topics floated in the recent times are numerous and excessive indeed”.

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on the Ethiopian government and its partners to maintain collaborative efforts to manage the ongoing prolonged cholera outbreak in the country. From August 2022 to Sept. 21, 2023, a total of 250 districts from 10 regions across the East African country were affected by the ongoing cholera outbreak. It remains crucial for the government and key partners to maintain collaborative efforts to manage this outbreak, the WHO noted, adding that in addition to the ongoing cholera outbreak, Ethiopia is currently grappling with a concurrent outbreak of multiple diseases, such as dengue fever, measles, and malaria, which have strained the healthcare system alongside cholera. It noted the urgent need for durable solutions to address the root causes of recurrent cholera outbreaks, which include poor-quality drinking water and open defecation. It said fecal contamination of drinking water is the main source of cholera, with most cholera patients using unsafe drinking water.

China prepares for summit under shadow of Israel-Gaza warBEIJINGChina prepared on Monday to host representatives of 130 countries for a forum that will be overshadowed by the Israel-Gaza war, as an increasingly assertive Beijing is asked to help de-escalate the violence. China has refused to condemn the Ukraine war in an effort to position itself as a neutral party, while at the same time offering Moscow vital diplomatic and financial support. "President Putin pointed out that a multipolar world is taking shape, and the concepts and initiatives put forward by President Xi Jinping are highly relevant and significant," CGTN reported. "He stated that President Xi Jinping is a well-recognised leader on the world stage and is a true world leader," it said. Putin also reportedly "shared pleasant memories between President Xi and him, and hoped tradition continues when they meet in China in the future."

An armed conflict has been roiling Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region since July 2023 with misinformation about the violence circulating widely on social media. Fano, a militia group in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region, has been locked in an armed conflict with government forces since July 2023. Ethiopia's human rights body has accused government forces of carrying out extra-judicial killings and mass arbitrary detentions in the restive Amhara region (archived here). At about 02’55” into the altered video, Abiy’s mouth movements once again do not align with the audio. Starting Monday, China is hosting representatives of 130 countries for a summit marking the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) forum, Beijing's global international infrastructure scheme, which is seen as a key pillar of President Xi Jinping's efforts to extend China's international reach. However, massive loans from Beijing that helped fund these projects have been criticized for saddling some poorer countries with debt. Lavrov and Wang discussed resolving the Ukraine war with "political and diplomatic methods," and also talked about the growing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza. Others leaders from Africa, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East will also attend the Belt and Road Forum, whose main events are on Wednesday. On Monday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe also arrived in Beijing.
