Nationals Leader David Littleproud has delivered a dare to the “morally bankrupt” Animals Australia regarding the international live export industry. "Investment confidence is gone because they are making production decisions now in Western Australia about sheep … there is no reason why we are shutting this industry down," Mr Littleproud told Sky News Australia. "There will be 3,000 livelihoods lost in Western Australia because of this. "These animal activists are morally bankrupt – go and get photos off these Sudanese and Ethiopian boats and show the Australian people. "I dare Animals Australia to go and do that and I’m sure the Australian public will be behind this industry continuing."

The port deal has severely strained Somali-Ethiopian relations and increased anti-Ethiopian sentiment in southern Somalia, which will likely weaken regional counterterrorism cooperation and energize al Shabaab. [14] Shortly after Ethiopia and Somaliland announced the deal, Somalia recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia for consultations. The Ethiopia-Somaliland port deal prompted an anti-Ethiopian backlash in southern Somalia. [30] Al Shabaab has historically capitalized on anti-Ethiopian sentiment to boost support among the Somali population across the Horn of Africa. [56] An Ethiopian port will only amplify Eritrea’s longer-term concerns of Ethiopian aggression, even if it allays short-term fears of an imminent invasion.

The body of the passenger jet, an Airbus 350, was made of carbon-composite fibers. The crash may become an important test of the safety of composite materials for some uses in aircraft. The larger Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger jet was given permission to use the runway where the coast guard plane, a Bombardier Dash-8, was preparing for takeoff. The FAA has said for more than 20 years that there are dangers related to composite materials. Although the inside of the passenger plane filled with smoke after the explosion, all 379 passengers were able to escape.

US: No recognition for breakaway Somaliland after Ethiopia sea access dealWASHINGTON - The United States on Wednesday rejected international recognition for breakaway Somaliland and called for calm after the region’s leaders signed a deal with Ethiopia. Somalia accused landlocked Ethiopia of attacking its sovereignty after Addis Ababa reached the agreement with Somaliland that gives long-sought access to the Red Sea. Somaliland president Muse Bihi Abdi, who signed the deal with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, said that in return for providing sea access, Ethiopia would “formally recognize” Somaliland. The Ethiopian government has not confirmed that it would recognize Somaliland. Somaliland has been seen as offering an oasis of stability, although it has failed to achieve international recognition.

Hagens Berman Axeon-Jayco completed their 2024 roster in late December with the signing of Alastair Mackellar, the 2023 double under-23 road national champion of Australia, and reigning Ethiopian national road champion Bizaye Redae. Two US domestic riders include 2023 junior road race champion Darren Parham and U23 national time trial silver medalist Evan Boyle. “With all of the young riders we hired, I needed to add some U23 experience in the team. Now in their 15th season, the team extended title sponsorship with Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP through 2026, and added Jayco as a new co-title sponsor.

International recognition has been a long-sought goal for Somaliland, a region in northern Somalia that has enjoyed de facto independence since 1991. But the terms of that victory differ for Ethiopia and Somaliland, and that could further complicate the situation in the coming days. While Somaliland insists that recognition has already been agreed upon and settled, Addis Ababa has been reluctant to firmly address the matter of statehood. A new strain in relationsAfter Somali independence in 1960 and until the end of the Cold War, the status of Ethiopia’s Somali region, its second largest by area, has been hotly contested between the two countries. “It’s possible that the UAE, which has cordial relations with both Ethiopia and Somaliland, may have encouraged the parties to proceed with the deal,” Mohamed explained.

The Houthis have seized a commercial ship and fired ballistic missiles and drones at commercial and naval ships in the Red Sea, threatening to close the crucial trade corridor to all Israel-bound and Israeli-operated ships. The Houthis claim that the attacks were carried out to put pressure on Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza. Separately, Yemen’s government and the Houthis have traded accusations for delaying long-awaited prisoner swap talks. The Houthis’ refusal to free Qahtan, who has been imprisoned since 2015, forced the Yemeni government to suspend negotiations with the militia last year. However, the leader of the Houthis’ prisoner exchange committee, Abdulkader Al-Murtada, accused the Yemeni government on Thursday of hindering the next round of negotiations by refusing to follow previously negotiated UN-brokered pledges, presumably referring to prison visits.

The Foreign Ministry expressed concern about a recent agreement signed by Ethiopia and Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland. He said that Türkiye wishes for the settlement of disputes between Somalia and Somaliland through direct negotiations, reiterating Ankara's support for initiatives in this regard. Farhan Jimale, spokesperson and director of Communications & Public Relations for the Somali government, welcomed the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman's statement. In 1991, Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia, leading to the establishment of two separate nations. The separation resulted in Ethiopia losing direct access to the Red Sea and key ports.

The ‘la mer’ that echoes in my ears is the one narrated by the one and only Fitewerari Teklehawariyat Teklemariam. However, we did have historical enemies in the colonial powers of the Ottoman Empire, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Our isolation was so much extended that we were subjected to and we subjected ourselves to countless myths and legends. Just the same there was something a generation of Ethiopian rulers have been lamenting about indiscriminately and incessantly-la mer! In Ethiopia, its Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, the Nobel Peace laureate, is causing tensions again. He agreed to recognise the breakaway state in exchange for a long-held desire — access to a Red Sea port. “We are very happy, and we thank the Ethiopian Prime Minister as we sign the agreement here. They will become the first state to recognise Somaliland after the signing of this MoU,” said Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi. Ethiopia has long wanted access to the sea; its Prime Minister recently called it an existential question.
