Eritrea fought a long and bloody war of independence from 1961 to 1991 against Ethiopia, to which it was annexed. This support was aimed at promoting self-determination for Eritrea, which Eritrea gallantly attained after decades of struggling against insurmountable odds. Somaliland’s president has declared that his government will move forward with an agreement signed earlier this month with Ethiopia, a landlocked country, to grant Ethiopia access to the sea via Somaliland’s coastline. Ethiopia, Abdi said, is seeking to lease a segment of the coastline for a naval base — and not for commercial activities as previously thought. In exchange for leasing a 20 kilometer- (12.4 mile-) stretch of Somaliland’s coastline, Ethiopia would recognize Somaliland as an independent state. Somalia has protested vehemently against the agreement that would grant Ethiopia access to the strategically important Gulf of Aden and beyond that, to the Red Sea. “Eritrea is likely to be deeply concerned, given its deteriorating relationship with Ethiopia and its long Red Sea coastline,” Bryden said.

As it turns out, port access does not seem to be part of the deal. Somaliland seems to be interested in Ethiopia to continue using the Berbera port for its import and export needs. The party said the agreement with Somaliland was signed in line with the party’s conviction that Ethiopia’s growing population and economy needs a sea access that can accommodate the needs. What is clear is, according to the Ethiopian government, Somaliland will get a certain portion of stake from Ethiopian Airlines. __Join our Telegram Channel : t.me/borkenaLike borkena on FacebookAdd your business to Ethiopian Business Listing / Ethiopian Business DirectoryJoin the conversation.
