Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has warned Ethiopia against attempts to violate Somalia’s territorial integrity, saying his country would ‘intervene’ if requested by Mogadishu. Al-Sisi affirmed on Sunday that Egypt stands with Somalia against any threat to its security and stability, expressing his rejection of the recent agreement signed between Somaliland and Ethiopia over a port in the Red Sea. Ethiopia currently relies on Djibouti as a major trade partner, as 95 percent of Ethiopia’s imports and exports pass through Djibouti. President Mohamud is currently on a diplomatic offensive to thwart Ethiopia’s attempts to access the Red Sea without the consent of Mogadishu. The Berbera Port has previously attracted foreign powers due to its strategic position at the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, connecting the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean to the Red Sea via the strait of Bab-el-Mandeb.
