CAIRO – 7 August 2023: The body of the missing worker of the sunken tugboat that collided with a giant tanker in the Suez Canal was recovered on Sunday evening, said Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chief Admiral Osama Rabie. The deceased was an Egyptian mechanic from Port Said called Sayed Moussa, Reuters quoted his family as saying. In a statement, Rabie said a SCA salvage team and the salvage crane Inkaz have been deployed to recover the tugboat Fahd after it collided with 230-meter Hong Kong-flagged LPG tanker Chinagas Legend. The oil tanker was sailing among the south convoy at the canal on its journey from Singapore to the United States when the incident took place. The tugboat sank after it was flooded with water due to the collision.

CAIRO – 6 August 2023: Those who throw trash on the Ring Road would be referred to the military prosecution, announced Minister of Transportation Kamel El Wazir in a statement on Sunday. The decision was issued in a bid to avoid possible road accidents and fulfill the health requirements of the population. The microbus caught fire after being rear-ended by a truck, according to reports. Egypt saw a decline in injuries due to road accidents by 9.3 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. However, the number of deaths due to road accidents in the country rose by 15.2 percent to 7,101, according to the official statistical agency (CAPMAS).

ISLAMABAD, Aug 6 (MENA) - At least 15 people were killed and over 40 were injured on Sunday when eight coaches of Pakistan's Hazara Express train en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi derailed near the Sarhari Railway Station in Nawabshah district. Police, rescue officials ambulances reached the site upon receiving information of the accident while train operations on the track were immediately suspended, according to the Express Tribune newspaper. Scores of villagers from nearby villages also reached the spot and started rescuing the stranded passengers. According to Rescue 1122, initially, 20 passengers were rescued and shifted to the Peoples Hospital Nawabshah. Director General Health Services Sindh Dr Irshad Memon said that 19 bodies have been transferred to nearby hospitals, including 12 to Sanghar and seven to the Nawabshah hospital.

The Ministry of Education and Technical Education on Saturday announced that the new academic year 2023/2024 will begin on Saturday September 30, 2023 and will end on June 8, 2024 for all the academic stages. The mid-year vacation of the first semester will start on January 27, 2024, for all public, private, language, and experimental schools. International schools having a desire to start the academic year earlier, as early as the last week in August, are required to submit a request to the Education Ministry for approval. The ministry said that the academic year will last for 35 weeks, adding that the second term will begin on February 10, 2024 and ends on June 6, 2024. The duration of the mid-year vacation will be two weeks between January 27 – February 8, 2024, the ministry added.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Saturday that the new discovery was made during the mission’s diving and archaeological survey work. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, said that Alamein was of commercial importance on the northern coast in the third century BC, with many commercial ports there. Ashmawy noted that these jars were found resting on a sunken island next to the ship, which indicates that the ship sank after it collided with the island during its commercial voyage. The Central Department of Sunken Antiquities is studying scenarios for dealing with the site’s archaeological finds and ways to safely remove them from the site and preserve them. The mission will complete the underwater excavation work during the season to uncover more of the ship’s secrets.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will head to N’djamena, capital of Chad, on Sunday to take part in the first meeting of the ministerial mechanism of the Sudan Neighbours Summit held on 13 July in Cairo. The countries neighbouring Sudan held their first meeting in Cairo, stressing the importance of preserving the Sudanese state and its capabilities and preventing its disintegration. The summit’s final communiqué revealed the formation of a ministerial mechanism on the crisis at the level of foreign ministers of neighbouring countries. The communication mechanism is discussing the executive measures required to address the repercussions of the Sudanese crisis on the future, stability, unity and territorial integrity of the Sudan. It will seek maintaining the Sudanese national institutions and preventing their collapse, developing guarantees to reduce the negative effects of the crisis on neighbouring countries, and studying the mechanism of humanitarian and relief assistance to the Sudanese people.

A meeting on the Ukraine crisis began on Saturday in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. A source from the Ukrainian delegation told Al Arabiya News that during the meeting, the 10-point peace plan proposed by Ukraine was backed by several countries. Through the meeting, the Saudi government looks forward to reinforcing dialogue and cooperation at the international level. It also aims to ensure a solution to the crisis through political and diplomatic means and in a way that strengthens international peace and security. Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui attended the meeting at the invitation of Saudi Arabia.

Banking expert Tarek Metwally explained on Friday that the Central Bank of Egypt’s decision on raising interest rate by 100 basis points – or one percent – in this year’s fifth meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee compensates depositors for the interest rate difference compared to the announced inflation rates. This increase does not mainly fight the announced inflation, he said, pointing out that the total increase in interest rates during the current year amounted to about three percent. Metwally added that after the decision, the variable interest rates on deposits will rise directly by one percent. He ruled out issuing a new high-yield certificate of deposit after CBE’s decision to raise the interest rate by one percent, explaining that raising the interest rate by 100 basis points is not enough to prompt banks to issue new CDs. “Government banks may resort to offering attractive CDs, but private banks will not compete in offering these deposits,” he stated.

CAIRO - 5 August 2023: Civil Defense Forces are trying to put out fire that erupted at the building of the Ministry of Awqaf in downtown Cairo Saturday morning. Ambulances and and fire brigades were dispatched to the scene. The building is almost empty of employees, due to the relocation of the ministry to its new headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, as well the coincidence of the incident with the weekend. Meanwhile, police officers were deployed to ease the traffic jam in the vicinity of the building .

A Palestinian civilian was killed in clashes with Israeli settlers in the West Bank, the Israeli military said Saturday. The Palestinian villagers hurled rocks at the Israeli settlers who responded by opening fire on them, leading to one death and four injuries, said the statement, adding a Palestinian car was burned in the clashes. Several Israelis were arrested in connection with the incident, and the suspect in the shooting, who also sustained injuries during the clashes, was detained in a Jerusalem hospital, Israeli media reported. Israeli settlers’ assaults on Palestinians have increased in recent months in the West Bank since the swearing-in of the right-wing Israeli government late last year. For more than a year, Israeli forces have intensified their raids in the West Bank in an attempt to push back on a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis, leading to escalating friction between the two sides.

CAIRO – 5 August 2023: Sudan Metro Station of Cairo Metro’s Line 3 will operate soon for the public after conducting a pilot operation, announced the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation in a statement on Saturday. On October 6, 2022, Cairo Metro’s third line received passengers for the pilot operation of the first part of phase three, which runs across four kilometers in the Egyptian capital. The 3A part consists of four underground stations, namely Gamal Abdel Nasser, Maspero, Safaa Hegazy, and Kit Kat. In mid-December 2021, the fourth phase of Cairo Metro Line 3 has claimed the US Engineering News-Record Magazine's (ENR) award as the world's best transport and railway project in 2021. The project is undertaken by a consortium made up of Arab Contractors Company and Orascom Construction PLC under the supervision of the Transport Ministry's National Authority for Tunnels

Cameroonian Minister of Housing and Urban Development Celestine Ketcha visited the New Administrative Capital in Egypt on Friday with a delegation of officials from her country. Sherif El-Sherbiny, head of Egypt’s New Administrative Capital Authority, explained to the delegation the executive status of the city’s projects and its main landmarks. The Cameroonian delegation then went on an inspection tour of the projects that have been implemented and are under implementation in the New Administrative Capital. They went up to the 74th floor of the Iconic Tower, the tallest tower in Africa, to view the city’s landmarks. The Cameroonian delegation expressed their appreciation for the urban development witnessed by Egypt currently, and for what the Egyptians are achieving in this great edifice.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Friday that his government is considering enacting laws to prevent the recurring incidents of burning and desecration of the Quran.
