The French teacher was charged with sex crimes towards a child after a classroom incident in the fall. A French teacher in Prince Edward Island has been acquitted of all charges after the judge found the Crown did not bring forward any evidence to suggest the teacher’s touching of a student in a classroom was sexual in nature. OC Transpo ended last year with a $52-million deficit as fare revenue fell short and other levels of government failed to come to the rescue. It's worse than the $47-million transit deficit forecast at mid-year. At budget time, OC Transpo was banking on $36 million in bail-out funding from the provincial or federal governments. OC Transpo is not expected to earn a profit and receives a substantial taxpayer subsidy. The report noted that it would have been a surplus had the province or the federal governments helped out OC Transpo.

The RCMP's commissioner says he expresses sincere regret for an extensive spying program that targeted hundreds of Indigenous people. It's the first time Mike Duheme acknowledged reporting by CBC Indigenous concerning RCMP surveillance activities dating back to the late 1960s against Indigenous leaders and organizations. Assembly of First Nations Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak calls the RCMP surveillance program on Indigenous people shocking and unacceptable. The Indigenous surveillance program was scaled back in 1978 to focus on foreign involvement in the Indigenous rights movement, according to documents. NDP public safety critic Jenny Kwan is pushing for public hearings into the RCMP program and the release of all remaining files related to spying on Indigenous people.

Canada is imposing more sanctions against five individuals and four entities involved in the Iranian war effort. The measures are part of Canada’s ongoing actions to counter Iran’s destabilizing activities, the federal department of Global Affairs said in a statement issued on Thursday morning. The sanctions target Iranian businessmen and companies directly involved in procuring technology in support of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Over the past two years, says Global Affairs, Canada has listed the IRGC as a terrorist organization under the Canadian Criminal Code and designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism. And in late 2022, Canada designated several senior Iranian officials in government, security and intelligence agencies inadmissible to Canada.

Pamela Boettcher was a teacher at the elementary school for 17 years, and now teaches at the high school. The new school, which will be a combined elementary and high school for about 450 students, has been approved for construction while other projects are put on pause. Boettcher said her father attended the high school in the 1950s, and it wasn't new back then, either. Shellbrook Mayor Amund Otterson said he was a high school science teacher for 30 years, ending in 2004. Much like Shellbrook, Keating said Carlyle's elementary school is aging rapidly and its high school is beyond its useful life.
