Library and Archives Canada (LAC) told CBC Indigenous it would need nearly four years to consult on a request to see 50-year old secret records from an RCMP program that spied on so-called "Native extremism." The fight began in 2022 when CBC Indigenous reporter Brett Forester used Access To Information (ATIP) to ask to see a file created by the RCMP Security Service, which monitored hundreds of Indigenous people during the 1970s, stored at the archives. The CBC Indigenous reporter persisted and submitted four new ATIP requests asking to see a handful of dossiers focused on Indigenous political organizations kept by the Mounties' "Racial Intelligence" section. Some of the RCMP Security Service's 'Native extremism' files now online at Library and Archives Canada. A team of journalists at CBC Indigenous and CBC Investigates have published a series of stories based on the released documents showing RCMP use of wiretaps, surveillance and paid informants to infiltrate legitimate Indigenous organizations.

Drivers and commuters can rejoice as two major downtown Toronto intersections are set to reopen weeks in advance after repairs and construction, according to Mayor Olivia Chow. Bay Street and College Street, as well as the Queen Street E. and Broadview Avenue intersection, are opening Friday night, said Chow at a news conference about the city's anti-congestion plan. Closures on Queen Street E. and Broadview Avenue began in mid-November last year for repairs to aging streetcar tracks and two 112-year-old watermains in the area, according to the city's website. Bay Street and College Street closed earlier this month for streetcar track repairs and to combine sewer infrastructure. Paula Fletcher said at the news conference that the Queen Street E. repairs "looked great" on Thursday night ahead of the reopening.

One Iranian told CBC news that residents are receiving text messages with headlines the government wants the public to read. While Iranian state media routinely shares images of missile alerts in Israel and damage from strikes, there is little official information about the destruction inside Iran after nearly four weeks of war. In this photo taken by the West Asia News Agency, protesters attend an anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli rally, in Tehran, Iran, March 26, 2026. There have been mass arrests which are often the result of late-night raids in major cities like Tehran and Shiraz. "For people like my parents, it's the second war that they are witnessing and they just want it to stop," he wrote.

OTTAWA — A new poll shows that three-quarters of Canadians, and most retirees, support scaling back Old Age Security (OAS) for seniors making more than $100,000 per year. The poll, conducted by Research Co. for advocacy group Generation Squeeze, finds that 73 per cent of Canadians support targeting OAS to households with incomes below $100,000. Just four per cent of seniors are excluded from OAS altogether because their incomes are too high. The results of the new poll are largely consistent with a poll Research Co. did for Generation Squeeze in 2024. The poll also found that some six in ten Canadians support phasing out the Age Amount and Pension Income tax credits, which Generation Squeeze says will save Canadians an additional $7 billion annually.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Fertilizer prices are squeezing North American farmers, and they’re putting Canada’s role in the supply chain under fresh scrutiny. The investigation follows a tough year for fertilizer prices and farmers. Between January and June 2025, fertilizer prices in the U.S. rose as much as 39 per cent, and since it is a core agricultural input, American farmers have borne the brunt. In January, potash prices were up 11 per cent year over year, and UAN28, a liquid nitrogen fertilizer, was up more than 25 per cent. Agricultural trade access and supply-chain stability have long been part of CUSMA talks , so the questions hanging over fertilizer producers — particularly Nutrien — could surface in this summer’s talks.

While the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to most of the world's marine traffic, experts say Iran appears to be letting a select number of ships pass from countries not aligned with its aggressors. UN Trade and Development estimates as many as 151 ships were transiting through the strait daily in February. Iran letting select ships passAside from Iranian ships, the bulk of the ships that have been getting through are linked to Pakistan, China and India, Schroden said. This suggests Iran "seems to have drawn a sort of clear line" between ships from countries tied to its aggressors and the ships that aren't. OTTAWA — Filmmaker and journalist Avi Lewis is heading into this weekend’s NDP leadership convention as the clear favourite to win it all. Some six in 10 Canadians who’ve opened their wallets to support an NDP leadership candidate have contributed to Lewis’s war chest. Fundraising totals have tracked closely to vote counts in the last two NDP leadership elections, putting Lewis on course for a first-ballot win on Sunday. “The Alberta NDP will have nothing to do with the Leap Manifesto cliff jumpers,” said Nenshi. Nenshi championed a successful resolution at last year’s Alberta NDP convention to allow provincial members to opt out from joining the federal party and says he’s not a member of the federal NDP.

The retired public servant, a specialist on the Indo-Pacific region, countered that she worked closed with Human Rights Watch, who did witness the abuses. “I condemn forced labour, in all its forms,” he added. “I am proud to support the government’s work to eradicate forced labour from supply chains and enforce Canada’s import prohibition.”Nowhere in his comments did he speak about reports of forced labour in China specifically. “Do you assess that Uyghur forced labour has and is being used in the PRC? Did you proactively raise the issue of human rights with PRC officials during your recent visit?,” the MP continued.

WATCH | Scenes from the last No Kings event in October 2025: Large crowds join 'No Kings' protests across U.S. | Duration 5:39 Organizers say roughly 2,500 events were planned for the second nationwide ‘No Kings’ protest against the Trump administration — nearly double the number from earlier this year. Sister protests are also expected in several countries, mostly in Europe, but also in Mexico, Australia and Canada. 'We'll never forget what happened here'There are reasons to believe the attendance projections aren't just idle hype, given the torrent of major developments from the Trump administration since autumn. The Trump administration has been accused of mismanaging the release of files, improperly redacting names in some cases, while mistakenly revealing the names of alleged victims in other instances. Snyder's argument points to perhaps the biggest reason Saturday's protests could be the most attended yet.

Jewish groups in Canada are applauding the 20-year sentence handed down Friday to an Ontario man on terrorism-related charges. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice sentenced Matthew Althorpe to 20 years imprisonment for facilitating a terrorist activity, instructing others to carry out a terrorist activity and committing an indictable offence (willfully promoting hatred) for a terrorist group. “He produced videos, images, publications, and posts on the social messaging application Telegram encouraging hate against minorities,” the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in a press release. “Today’s sentencing sends a powerful message: those who spread hate, inflict violence, and terrorize communities will be held fully accountable under the law,” the groups said. “His hatred and violent extremism targeted all those who did not align with his grotesque ideology,” they said.

Nova Scotia RCMP are focusing the search for a missing man on a small rural community near Truro after receiving video that clearly showed the man on someone's property. Jason Lorette was reported missing on March 20 and was last seen in the Harmony Road area of Salmon River on March 19. Marc Rose said police received video surveillance earlier this week that showed Lorette in the community of Lower Harmony roughly one hour after the previous sighting on Harmony Road. The communities are approximately five kilometres apart, meaning Lorette was likely moving at a "fast, steady" pace, said Rose. Crews were scouring the area on Friday, including ground search and rescue teams and an RCMP police dog.
