The strike was notable for the reported use of the Oreshnik, a mobile, medium‑range hypersonic ballistic missile system that Russia describes as capable of carrying multiple warheads and either conventional or nuclear payloads. Moscow’s Defense Ministry framed the operation as retaliation and said it carried out a "massive strike" with high‑precision long‑range land‑ and sea‑based weapons, including the Oreshnik. Russian accounts claimed the hypersonic weapon struck an underground natural gas storage facility near the EU and NATO border with Poland. If the Oreshnik did strike energy infrastructure, the event would heighten European concerns about winter gas reserves and the vulnerability of cross‑border energy storage. The use of a hypersonic system in an attack near NATO-aligned territory also sharpens long‑term policy questions.

This handout photo from the Security Service of Ukraine purports to show part of Russian nuclear-capable hypersonic Oreshnik missile system is at the site of a Russian strike in the Lviv region on Friday. The first time Russia used the intermediate range missile was in November 2024 when it targeted an industrial facility in Dnipro.

The degree to which audiences, critics and Hollywood insiders alike can't get enough of Heated Rivalry is "beyond the scope of anything" anyone working on it could have imagined, Ontario-born G.K. told CBC News. And that was not the case with Heated Rivalry, which HBO Max acquired in November; production of the series happened in the spring. Heated Rivalry has broken down barriers not just for 2SLGBTQ+ stories in mainstream television and streaming, but also for distinctly Canadian stories, industry experts say. Heated Rivalry can, however, be considered for the International Emmys, which are entirely separate and not televised. (The Canadian Press)But even without the official accolades, Heated Rivalry is winning something many Canadian productions haven't: a huge international audience.

Manitoba Progressive Conservative MLA Derek Johnson represents the riding of Interlake—Gimli, where global liquor colossus Diageo makes Crown Royal whisky from the finest grains of the Canadian Prairies. In a quintessential piece of utter Ford-brand nonsense, he then advised Ontarians to “stock up” on Crown Royal — the Canadian whisky we should, in his mind, be boycotting. Also, banishing Crown Royal isn’t in Ontario’s interests. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementFord’s “Buy Canadian” shtick always meant “Buy Ontarian.” But these filthy American trains satisfy neither criteria whatsoever. If that train was a bottle of whisky, Ford would have poured it out on the sidewalk and expected applause for doing so.

Although Alberta separatists are organizing for an independence referendum and say they’re gaining momentum, a new poll released Friday suggested that only one-fifth of Alberta respondents would vote to separate. The Pollara Strategic Insights survey found that 19 per cent of the 1,000 Albertans surveyed say they would vote for separation, and 75 per cent would vote against it. If the petition receives at least 177,732 approved signatures by May, Albertans could vote on a separation referendum as soon as this fall. However, the Pollara survey suggested that only 16 per cent of young people would vote for Alberta to leave Canada. Like the Pollara survey, a margin of error does not apply for the Research Co. survey.
