Overcapacity in Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital leads to health and safety notice – CBCSask. nurses’ union vexed but unsurprised by contravention noticeOct 09, 2024Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital was issued a notice of contravention from a Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety officer stemming from overcapacity and the risks it causes to workers. In the notice, which has been shared on social media and verified by CBC, the occupational health officer acknowledges three issues — including obstructing safe means of entry and exit areas, and obstructions that could affect staff health and welfare — all driven by too many patients in the emergency room and area. “I’m not the least bit surprised that that happened,” said Tracy Zambory, president of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses. “The phenomenon that brought us to having this contravention at Royal University Hospital is not new; it has been coming and happening for what almost seems like years now.”Read more: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/overcapacity-in-saskatoon-s-royal-university-hospital-leads-to-health-and-safety-notice-1.7346738

Using math and machine learning, researchers predict early flu spike in Canada, U.S. – CBCUniversity of Alberta professor says the data could help public health officials prepareOct 10, 2024A team of Canadian and American researchers says their method of forecasting the rate of transmission of infectious diseases is predicting an earlier spike in influenza cases this year. Using mathematics and machine learning, the researchers analyzed data from late 2015 to September 2024, incorporating weather conditions, policy choices and movement patterns (drawn from cell phones) to predict how diseases like influenza and COVID-19 might spread. The team expects there will be more than 1,600 new flu cases confirmed each day in U.S. laboratories by the end of November, nearly double the number of cases during the same time period last year. “For the prediction in this report, we applied U.S. data, but I think we would state that if we used Canadian data, similar conclusions would be drawn,” said Hao Wang, director of the Interdisciplinary Lab for Mathematical Ecology and Epidemiology at the University of Alberta.
