As the most numerous animals on Earth, there’s no doubt that bugs have been getting busy. Several University of Toronto researchers recently shared their insights into insects’ mating rituals in the Bug Sex episode of The Nature of Things, a CBC documentary series hosted by environmentalist David Suzuki. “Sex in bugs is fascinating, gruesome, counterintuitive,” says Maydianne Andrade, professor in the department of biological science at U of T Scarborough and renowned expert on the mating habits of cannibalistic spiders. They were joined on the episode by U of T Mississauga’s Darryl Gwynne, a professor emeritus of biology, and Rosalind Murray, an assistant professor of biology. “Nature is amazing in what it generates in terms of diversity – same thing goes for the mating game,” says Gwynne, who was Andrade’s PhD supervisor.

Solar storms that produce vibrant northern lights also create an electrical current in the ground that can cause transformers — a component of traditional energy infrastructure — to overheat. Solar storms are when the sun occasionally hurls charged magnetic particles toward Earth. Northern countries are especially vulnerable to major solar storms because the Earth’s magnetic field tends to attract those particles toward its poles. “We know very well the risks for traditional power systems, but… in the future high penetration of wind power, solar and battery storage, that changes the nature of the power system,” he said. Wind and solar power are intermittent sources of energy — meaning they don’t provide a consistent, stable supply of power.

Canadians uninterested in King Charles’ coronation, British monarchy, survey suggestsMONTREAL — New polling results suggest Canadians are largely indifferent to King Charles, and more than half believe his May 6 coronation is the right time for the country to reconsider its ties with the monarchy. The web survey of 1,544 adults released Tuesday by market research firm Leger indicates many Canadians are greeting the ascension of Charles to the throne with a shrug. Only 13 per cent of those surveyed said they felt a personal attachment to the monarchy, compared with 81 per cent who didn't. King Charles' coronation will take place May 6 at Westminster Abbey and will be marked by a procession, a concert at Windsor Castle and other events. While 44 per cent of respondents said they were aware of the event, 73 per cent said they weren't interested.

When you’re hot, you’re hot. Dallas’ Evgenii Dadonov, a recently-acquired trade deadline pickup, was credited with breaking a scoreless tie in Seattle with a ricocheting, pinballing goal that took, as Stars’ broadcaster Razor Reaugh put it, a “daffy” path past Kraken goalie Martin Jones and into the back of the net. It was shortly followed by Jamie Benn, who put in his 28th of the year. Dallas finished the first period with a 2-1 lead, and eventually went on to a 5-2 win to complete a two-game sweep of the Seattle Kraken.
