The number of Canadian applications for the Nexus trusted-traveller program has fallen off a cliff since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to the White House last year. But the border agency said that it received half the number of applications — just under 350,000 — in 2025, compared to the previous year when nearly 700,000 travellers applied for a Nexus card. The drop-off in Nexus applications spurred Sen. Paula Simons to propose a domestic alternative for Canadians who want to quickly move through airport security. But under the current system, the only way for a member of the general public to become a verified traveller is through the Nexus program. (Roger Cosman/CBC)Simons noted that the U.S. has its own verified traveller program, called TSA PreCheck, that is separate from Nexus.

Understanding the problem: Documented Foreign Interference in CanadaForeign interference in Canada is not theoretical speculation or partisan allegation. Elections Canada and the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections conducted reviews of foreign interference allegations from the 2019 and 2021 elections (Elections Canada 2023). Domestic and International ConsequencesThe documented foreign interference operations generate concrete negative consequences across domestic governance and international relations. In this context, Canada’s perceived permissiveness toward foreign interference – whether real or perceived – creates friction in the bilateral relationship. The June 2024 Countering Foreign Interference Act created the Foreign Influence Transparency and Accountability Act (FITAA), but implementation remains incomplete (Thomas and Laudan 2024).

Dimon is shown at the 56th annual World Economic Forum meeting last week, where he criticized Trump's proposed 10 per cent cap on credit card interest rates. The average U.S. credit card interest rate was 23.79 per cent in January, according to the online financial marketplace LendingTree. 'Economic disaster'Trump has been under pressure to act on the affordability promises made during his 2024 presidential campaign, which included a credit card rate cap as a means of tackling rising household debt . Warren has argued in favour of capping interest rates on credit cards, having recently written in a letter to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that credit borrowers are paying interest rates far higher than needed to cover any default losses. The United States could alter its decades-old North American Aerospace Defense Command deal with Canada should its government backtrack on the purchase of 88 Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, the U.S. ambassador to Canada has warned. In the latest back-and-forth between the U.S. and Canada over the deal, Ambassador Pete Hoekstra cautioned that if Canada purchased fewer fighter jets, the U.S. would “fill those gaps” in security concerns. That could mean the U.S. would need to purchase more F-35 fighter jets for its own use and use them to intervene in Canadian airspace more frequently. However, Hoekstra indicated U.S. intervention would go even further, should the fighter jet deal change, thus requiring new terms to the Cold War-era agreement. Now, Canadian officials are reportedly looking to other countries to supply it with fighter jets, including Saab, the Swedish aerospace and defense company that creates the JAS 39 Gripen E fighter.
