One of the most consequential questions of the 2024 U.S. presidential election has now been turned over to the Supreme Court. Without immediate action, Smith said, the dispute could drag into the next Supreme Court term , and remain unresolved before the election. Late Monday, the Supreme Court announced it had agreed to expedite consideration of Smith's request. Now, Smith is essentially attempting to turbocharge the process — to skip past the U.S. Court of Appeals and go straight to the Supreme Court. The appeals court dismissed Trump's expansive claims of presidential immunity from prosecution, concluding this immunity did not cover election-related activities.

Minister mum on confidence in CBC head, says work to find successor begins next year Dec 12, 2023 | 8:51 AMOTTAWA — Heritage Minister Pascale St. Onge says the government will convene a committee early in the new year to begin searching for a new head of CBC/Radio-Canada. The mandate of the public broadcaster’s current president and CEO Catherine Tait, who was first appointed in 2018 and saw her contract renewed in June, is set to expire in January 2025. St. Onge wouldn’t directly answer reporters’ questions today about whether she still has confidence in Tait, saying the government’s focus is finding the “right person” to lead once she is no longer in the role. Tait’s tenure has fallen under heightened scrutiny after she announced plans last week to cut 600 jobs and not fill 200 vacancies over the next year to manage a $125-million shortfall.

The question of how and when the world should wean itself off of oil, coal and gas have dominated the summit in U.A.E. The majority of countries want strong language calling for the phase-out of fossil fuels by 2050, while that type of commitment is opposed by Saudi Arabia and some other large oil-producing countries. All of these countries need to understand what is at stake and they need to remind themselves because climate change does not recognize borders. A record 100,000 people registered for the COP28 climate summit in Dubai and an estimated 70,000 have shown up. Unless we actually acknowledge that it is a phase-out of fossil fuels that will save our planet, what is the point of us being here?

They say that Blacks have taken scholarships and grants away from more deserving white kids. And get this: More than a few racist faculty members were advising these students, joining them, and cheering them on! All of those racist students have been suspended; some lost their financial aid. And some white football players I know from one of my classes escorted me to the dining hall and libraries. That’s why I didn’t say anything until now.

The fleet management report recommends the purchase of the three hybrid buses. Despite higher upfront costs — a new hybrid transit bus costs approximately $337,000 more than a diesel bus — municipal officials are confident savings will be realized through lower fuel and maintenance costs. A diesel bus retails for $850,000 while the hybrid bus price is $1,187,000. The report indicates the new hybrid buses will not arrive until 2025 due to factory delays when all of the three identified diesel buses will be out of use. BayToday inquired about the financial and operational efficiencies the municipality expects to realize in the switch to hybrid transit buses.

“We need to prepare for scenarios in which the Arctic becomes much more contested and subject to conflict,” Lord Ashton of Hyde, chair of the committee, said in a statement. “The Arctic is a very challenging environment to operate in and requires specialised skills. It is vital that we maintain sufficient equipment and regular cold-weather training so that those skills are maintained and consolidated.”The committee characterizes the present U.K. Arctic policy as “well-calibrated,” emphasizing the ongoing unpredictability of the region. “UK scenario planning will need to consider the possibility that China could in future seek to establish a military presence in the Arctic,” the report said. “The UK Government remains committed to holding cold weather training and military exercises in the High North.

The good old CBC has a problem: they have a revenue shortfall of about $125 million and are laying off about 600 people. Continually paying top bosses large bonuses while the news world around them crumbles with new technology and younger people looking at alternative news sources, the CBC advertising revenue is drying up. The CBC has been shielded by this fact by running to Justin Trudeau and asking for more money from the government to shield employees from the real world. Well, the reality has caught up to the CBC, Mr. Trudeau has run the resource sector in Canada into the ground. At least the CBC job losses should be spread across Canada and no one community will be severely impacted.
