While an Indigenous person may have previously crossed the Canada-U.S. border with only a secure status card, a valid passport is now advised. Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) notes when it comes to crossing the border by land that acceptance of status cards is entirely at the discretion of U.S. officials. ISC also warns that status cards are not valid documents for air travel. “The AFN strongly condemns these actions and reaffirms First Nations inherent and Treaty rights to cross-border mobility.”The AFN, like ISC, is now recommending First Nations members carry a Canadian passport. The treaty also ensured that First Nations people would be allowed to travel, trade and work in both countries.
Ontario’s student financial aid system is set to undergo its most significant changes since 2019. The province announced the changes last week alongside a $6.4 billion postsecondary funding commitment, describing the reforms as a step toward long-term sustainability. For low-income students, added costs will be offset through the Student Access Guarantee, which ensures tuition, books and mandatory fees are covered if OSAP funding falls short. For example, a student who previously received $10,000 in OSAP funding could have received up to $8,500 as a non-repayable grant. The OSAP changes are part of a broader $6.4-billion investment over four years, intended to stabilize Ontario’s postsecondary sector.

When Beau Harper met 108-year-old Joan Fuller at last year’s Remembrance Day service in Mount Hope, Ont., he knew he was witnessing something rare. The 1939-1945 war medal was awarded to those who completed at least 28 days of service between Sept. 3, 1939, and Sept. 2, 1945. At 108, she is believed to be among the oldest recipients of the 1939-1945 war medal.
