Tribunal to set date of verdict against Hasina in crimes against humanity caseThe International Crimes Tribunal is to set a date for the verdict in a crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina over the suppression of the July Uprising on Thursday. This began the trial of the first crimes against humanity case against Hasina at the court her government formed to try the war criminals of 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal was reconstituted after the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024. The first case against Sheikh Hasina was filed in the reconstituted tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam sought the death penalty for Hasina and Asaduzzaman on charges of crimes against humanity.

Twenty-nine people have been arrested in a special drive conducted by police in Narayanganj ahead of a programme announced by the Awami League, whose activities remain officially banned. Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi said the arrestees are leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations. They were planning sabotage focusing on the Awami League programme. Additionally, at least seven Awami League leaders and activists have been arrested in Rupganj Upazila. Rupganj Police chief Tariqul Islam said the arrested individuals were travelling to Dhaka to help make the programme called by the Awami League successful.

Bangladesh is set to construct a container port on the banks of the Karnaphuli River, with Denmark-based APM Terminals selected to both build and operate the Laldia Port for 30 years under a public–private partnership. As a signing payment, APM Terminals will pay Tk 2.5 billion to the government upon finalisation of the deal, he added. The PPPA said APM Terminals will design, finance, build, and operate the Laldia facility, but its ownership will remain with the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA). According to the World Bank, APM Terminals currently operates more than 60 terminals in 33 countries and manages ports in 10 of the world’s top 20. Ashik added that workers trained under the project would also have opportunities to work at APM Terminals’ other international ports.

Meanwhile, the "banned" Awami League has called for a citywide “lockdown,” and its rivals have vowed to resist. After completing legal reforms and electoral preparations, the Election Commission (EC) led by AMM Nasir Uddin is set to meet registered political parties for the first time. Provisions requiring allied parties to vote on their own symbols may still generate differing opinions during EC dialogue, even after amendments to the RPO. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said, “Dialogue with parties is being held on the RPO, code of conduct, and measures for a fair election. The EC will consider parties’ thoughtful opinions in this process.”The CEC and four election commissioners will attend the dialogue sessions. Police have conducted a raid at the Chashma Hill residence of former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel in Chattogram and detained seven people following reports that Awami League activists were gathering there. “We received information that the Awami League and its affiliated organisations were gathering there. The Chashma Hill residence is known as the ancestral property of the late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former Chattogram mayor and Awami League president. His son Nowfel served as education minister in the ousted Awami League government. The restaurant was closed after Aug 5 last year, but online food delivery continued from the kitchen at the house.

Hand grenades set off at Dhaka University’s TSC, no casualties reportedTwo hand grenades have been detonated at Dhaka University’s TSC. Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed said the blasts occurred around 9:30pm on Wednesday, adding that no casualties were reported. He said, “Miscreants threw two hand grenades from near the Suhrawardy Udyan. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has expressed concerns over “human rights violations” targeting former Bangladeshi members of parliament. It cited “threats, acts of intimidation, arbitrary arrest and detention, inhumane conditions of confinement, and a lack of due process” against the former MPs. “Among them, heroic freedom fighter and former minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun died in custody on the 29th of Sept, 2025. Eight other MPs are on temporary bail,” the statement read. It reaffirmed the IPU’s readiness to support these efforts and requested that competent authorities provide information on how such assistance can be most effectively delivered.

Three people, including two leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), have been beaten up as they attempted to form a human chain at Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex in Mymensingh, alleging “irregularities, corruption, broker misconduct, and syndicates”. Police arrested one person from the area during the incident from outside Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex around 12:30pm on Wednesday. The injured are NCP's Ishwarganj Upazila branch Chief Coordinator Md Mozammel Haque, Mymensingh district NCP Organiser Masum Billah, and Chhatra Shibir activist Shihab Uddin. A CNG-powered autorickshaw has been set on fire on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road, while a hand grenade has exploded in the Manikganj bus stand area. The arson took place outside the Youth Development office in Narayanganj's Jalkuri area around 9:30pm on Wednesday, said Fatullah Police chief Anwar Hossain. Earlier, a hand grenades exploded in the Manikganj bus stand area around 8:30pm, according to district police. “On the pretext of talking on the phone, they got off the autorickshaw, set it on fire, and fled from the scene. Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Narayanganj BNP and allied organisations marched against the Awami League from evening to 10pm.

Earlier, three sources familiar with the investigation said police were checking whether there was a link between the blast and the previous arrest of a group of seven men from the restive Kashmir region with arms and bomb-making material. Indian authorities are investigating the blast under a stringent anti-terrorism law and have said that all angles are being probed. Police found two pistols, two assault rifles and 2,900 kg of bomb-making material during the raids, a Kashmir police statement said. India accuses Pakistan of supporting Islamist militants in Kashmir, the Himalayan region which both nations claim, but Islamabad denies the accusation. Following the Delhi blast, Kashmir police carried out raids at hundreds of locations in the Himalayan region and about 500 people were detained, a Kashmir police source told Reuters.

Two young men have “confessed” to the abduction and murder of Sudipto Roy, a student of Dhaka’s Cambrian College. Sudipto, an 11th-grade student at Cambrian School and College’s Jagannathpur branch, resided at the college hostel on Shaheed Abdul Aziz Road in Bhatara. No one entered the flat until Nov 11 morning, when the tenants noticed a foul odour and alerted police. After the body was recovered on Nov 11, charges were updated to include murder following the failure to pay ransom. The two were previously acquainted, and Abdullah lured Sudipto to the flat in Diabari where the murder took place.

Evaly owners sentenced to five more years in prisonA Dhaka court has sentenced Mohammad Rassel, managing director of the e-commerce company Evaly, and his wife, the company’s Chairman Shamima Nasrin, to five more years in prison in a fraud case. The couple have now been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison in six cases. The week before that, on Apr 6, they were sentenced to three years in prison in a breach of trust and fraud case. In addition, on Jan 29, they were sentenced to two years in prison in another case. Before that, on Jan 2, 2024, Rassel and Shamima were sentenced to one year in prison in a case filed by a customer in Chattogram.

A stationary train has caught fire at Tejgaon Railway Station in Dhaka. Dhaka Railway Police Station chief Zainal Abedin said the incident occurred around 9:30pm on Wednesday. “No one was injured in the fire,” he confirmed. A video circulating on social media shows flames engulfing an empty carriage of the parked train. Officer Zainal added, “Around 9:30pm, a fire was set in an outlying coach near Tejgaon Station.
