Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has advised the government of the United States to take care of issues in its own country first instead of giving Bangladesh and other countries ‘lectures’ on human rights. Two Bangladeshis were shot dead in broad daylight in the city of Buffalo, New York in the latest incident. The prime minister was asked about the issue during her press conference on her recent trip to Thailand. But elsewhere that same country is seen as outspoken about human rights.”Criticising domestic and foreign human rights organisations, she said, “And these human rights agencies… There are many big human rights advocates in our country too, why are they silent now?”“Why don’t they take action? Whenever I get a chance, I try to tell people from my own experience why I am against this war.

Re: “Students Stage Pro-Palestine Encampment on the Arts Quad”The right for all to speak freely is fundamental to the mission of a university. But the current encampment in the Arts Quad is a clear violation of University policies. It is an act of civil disobedience and, like all perpetrators of civil disobedience, the students occupying the encampment deserve to face the consequences of their actions in the University judicial system. The protesters demand for “amnesty” undercuts any claim of moral clarity — the key element of civil disobedience is the willingness to face the full consequences of one’s actions. So long as Cornell and law enforcement apply time, place and manner regulations in a content-neutral way, the encampments are not protected by free speech principles.
