Joint operations by the Bangladesh Army in the capital’s Uttara Badda and Dhalpur areas of Jatrabari have led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of illegal firearms, ammunition, narcotics, and cash, officials said. In Uttara Badda, army personnel recovered one rifle, seven pistols, and three revolvers, along with a significant amount of ammunition and related equipment. In a separate operation in Dhalpur, Jatrabari, the army recovered two foreign pistols, one revolver, three rounds of ammunition, a large quantity of drugs, and cash. The seized weapons, narcotics, and other evidence are being prepared for handover to the relevant police stations for further legal action. ISPR added that such operations will continue across the capital to maintain law and order and curb terrorism and criminal activities.

Among others, 11-party alliance candidate for Barisal-3 constituency and AB Party General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad were present at the program.

As the activists attempted to move from InterContinental crossing towards Jamuna, police tried to block their path. Following the InterContinental clash, activists once again took to the streets at Banglamotor intersection, staging a demonstration in front of Rupayan Tower. Police have been using tear gas to disperse the protesters, but each time authorities retreat, the activists return to occupy the main road. Traffic from Banglamotor to InterContinental intersection remained blocked, though vehicles were moving using alternate routes. The demonstration followed an earlier protest on Thursday, when Inqilab Mancha activists staged a sit-in in front of Jamuna, remaining there throughout the day.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that the party's election manifesto will mark a "new sunrise" for Bangladesh, an event for which the entire nation is eagerly waiting. Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks while delivering the welcome speech at the BNP's election manifesto unveiling program held at the ballroom of the Sonargaon Hotel in the capital. During his speech, Mirza Fakhrul paid deep respect to the late former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as the "Mother of Democracy". Regarding the party's future, Mirza Fakhrul announced that the BNP is entering a "new chapter". Concluding his speech, Mirza Fakhrul urged the people of the country to come forward and write a new history for Bangladesh under the guidance of this new leadership.

The rally was organized in support of Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, the 11-party alliance candidate for the Patuakhali-2 (Bauphal) constituency. Addressing economic crimes, Dr. Rahman alleged that approximately Tk 28 lakh crore has been looted and laundered out of the country. "In a nutshell, New START was flawed," Thomas G. DiNanno, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, told reporters in Geneva, pointing out that it had not covered all nuclear weapons, "and it didn't include China".

Photo : BSSRAJSHAHI, Feb 6, 2026 (BSS) – The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered two foreign-made pistols, four magazines and eight rounds of ammunition from a border area in Rajshahi early today. Acting on tip-off, members of a nearby Border Outpost (BOP) took coordinated positions and set up an ambush along the border area. Sensing the presence of BGB personnel, an arms trafficker fled the scene, leaving behind the weapons along with a motorcycle. The arms were recovered following a search of the abandoned motorcycle, said Lieutenant Colonel Riaz Shahriar, Commanding Officer of BGB’s 1st Battalion in Rajshahi. Besides, around 700 BGB personnel, including 10 striking reserve members at each of the 16 BOPs along the border, are currently on duty.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Friday warned that anyone attempting to steal votes or commit election fraud will face consequences similar to those faced by fascists. Speaking at an election rally in Savar for Dilshana Parul, the 11-party alliance candidate for Dhaka-19, Nahid Islam said: “The upcoming election is for the people’s future. Nahid Islam described the election as a chance to give a verdict against oppression and to free the country from hegemonists and fascists. The rally, held at the ground near Matribagan Mosque in Shahibagh, Savar Municipality, was presided over by NCP Savar Upazila convener Zulkarnain. Dilshana Parul, Jamaat’s Dhaka District Jamaat Ameer Maulana Delwar Hossain, District Secretary Maulana Afzal Hossain, District Jamaat Legal Affairs Secretary Advocate Shahidul Islam, and Savar District Political Secretary Hasan Mahbub Master, also spoke.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called for corruption to be fully eradicated, warning that tackling only its “leaves or branches” would be insufficient. He stressed the need for removing corruption from its roots to ensure good governance and accountability in Bangladesh. BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman attended the party’s election manifesto announcement program at Hotel Sonargaon on Friday. Senior BNP leaders and representatives of allied parties in the joint movement were present at the event. Editors from various media houses, members of civil society, and diplomats of different foreign missions also attended. The party’s manifesto has been prepared under the slogan: “We will work, we will build the nation.” It incorporates the 2030 Vision announced by Begum Khaleda Zia in 2016 and the 31-point programme proposed by Tarique Rahman. Several key elements from the party’s 19-point manifesto of 2018 have also been highlighted in the new document.

The New Start treaty ended at the turn of the calendar on February 5, after Trump did not follow up on Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend warhead limits in the agreement for one year. Russia and the United States together control more than 80% of the world’s nuclear warheads, but arms agreements have been withering away. New Start, first signed in 2010, limited each side’s nuclear arsenal to 1,550 deployed strategic warheads -- a reduction of nearly 30% from the previous limit set in 2002.

Six platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in the Kakrail Mosque and Hotel InterContinental areas on Friday to strengthen security around Jamuna, the official residence of the chief adviser, according to a BGB statement. The deployment came as government employees staged a protest surrounding Jamuna, demanding the gazette notification and immediate implementation of the ninth national pay scale based on the recommendations of the Ninth Pay Commission. Around 11:15am, protesters broke through police barricades on the road adjacent to Hotel InterContinental and gathered at the entrance of Jamuna, chanting slogans. Police later fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. Protesters warned that they would not leave the area until the ninth pay scale is officially gazetted and said they would continue their demonstration throughout the day if the government fails to act.

The talks are the first between the two foes since the United States joined Israel’s war with Iran in June with strikes on nuclear sites. This agreement ensures duty-free access for 97% of Bangladeshi exports, including garments, while deliberately excluding Japanese automobiles from duty-free entry. Japan is already our largest Asian export destination, with shipments worth around $2 billion annually. Yet, the fact that Japanese investment in Bangladesh remains modest, at about $500 million, means there is untapped potential there and the EPA provides the framework to change that. With 97 service sub-sectors opened to Japan, and 120 reciprocated by Tokyo, the scope for collaboration extends far beyond RMG and into ICT, logistics, healthcare, and renewable energy. If we can match ambition with effective facilitation, this partnership with Japan could be just the first step of our post-LDC growth story.
