JAKARTA, Dec 22, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A coach bus slammed into a barrier on an Indonesian highway early Monday, flipping over in an accident that killed at least 16 people, a rescue worker said. Footage shared by the agency showed rescuers moving a victim into a body bag as the nearby bus lay on its side. Transport accidents are common in Indonesia, a vast Southeast Asian archipelago where vehicles are often old and poorly maintained and road rules regularly flouted. In 2024, at least 12 people were killed when a car crashed into a bus and another car on a busy highway as people travelled to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. And in 2019, at least 35 people were killed when a bus plunged into a ravine on the western island of Sumatra.

MOUNT MAUNGANUI, New Zealand, Dec 22, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - The West Indies lost five wickets for just 11 runs on Monday to be 99-5 as New Zealand closed in on victory on the final day of the third Test at Mount Maunganui. On a pitch with large cracks causing inconsistent movement and bounce, seamer Jacob Duffy and spinner Ajaz Patel threatened both edges of the bat. The West Indies still need 363 more runs for victory, while New Zealand require five more wickets to seal the match. Patel struck in the next over, removing Campbell for 16 after a rash attempt to slog down the ground. Duffy then dismissed Alick Athanaze for two and Justin Greaves for nought in successive overs, leaving the West Indies reeling.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Former Malaysian leader Najib Razak lost a bid Monday to have his jail term changed to house arrest, a setback ahead of a separate verdict this week tied to the country's 1MDB scandal. But on Monday, Judge Alice Loke Yee Ching Loke disagreed, saying the royal addendum was not a valid order. Therefore "the court cannot issue an ...order to direct a house arrest", Loke told the Kuala Lumpur High Court. "There is no legal provision for house arrest in Malaysia," the judge added. On Friday, Najib faces yet another verdict in a separate trial linked to the financial scandal that led to his defeat in the 2018 elections.

Yalda falls on the winter solstice and is characterised by family gatherings and the eating of nuts, sweets and fruits. We reminisce about the good old days and eat nuts and fruits that are in season," said Mary Goudarzi, 37. "Unfortunately, because of recent events such as the war and the dollar price that's rising sharply, people's purchasing power has fallen a lot," said Goudarzi, an interior designer.
