ODESA, Ukraine, March 15, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Ukraine said Friday thatRussian forces had pounded the Black Sea port city of Odesa with missiles,killing more than a dozen people including a paramedic and a rescue worker. Local authorities said Russian aerial bombardments struck residentialbuildings, cars and a gas pipeline leaving at least 16 people dead and woundinganother 55 people, including rescuers. Yermak was apparently referring to a series of fatal Ukrainian strikes onRussian territory and several attempts by pro-Kyiv militias to gain a holdinside Russian border regions this week. There was no immediate comment on the strikes from Russia, whose forceshave routinely targeted the transport hub with drones and missiles. City officials said Moscow had targeted Odesa with the Iskander missileslaunched from the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Many faith organizations felt that religious organizations were being unfairly targeted compared to secular gatherings at restaurants or grocery stores. There’s no doubt that implementing restrictions violates Charter rights, but public health emergencies dictate the need. “Governments may appropriately subject religious gatherings to stricter regulations than certain secular activities precisely because religious gatherings pose risks that are different in degree and kind than those secular activities,” wrote the author, Misha Boutillier.

A man in his 70s and a boy as young as 11 are among four people who have lost their lives in separate road accidents in Dhaka. Two people died at Mohammadpur while the other two died in accidents in Banani and Jatrabari on Thursday night, reports bdnews24.com. Two children were tossed off a motorcycle near the Mayur Villa adjacent to Mohammadpur Bus Stand around 11:45 pm. “A covered van hit the motorbike from rear when it reached the Mayur Villa adjacent to Mohammadpur Bus Stand,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Azizul Islam. Meanwhile, another pedestrian, Abul Kalam Azad, died in another road accident when an unidentified vehicle hit him on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, according to Jatrabari Police Station chief Forman Ali.

The government has named Dr Mubarak Ahmad Khan, the inventor of jute polythene bags, among 10 other individuals for the Swadhinata Padak. Renowned scientist Dr Mubarak Ahmad Khan has won the ‘independence award’ for his contribution to the field of science and technology. Dr Harishankar Das won the award for medical science, Mohammad Rafiquzzaman for culture, and athlete Firoza Khatun for sports. Freedom Fighter Dr Mollah Obaydullah Baki and SM Abraham Lincoln have also been named for the award for their contribution to social services. Each of the awardees received an 18-carat gold medal, Tk 300,000 and a certification of appreciation for their contributions.

One of the 32 people undergoing treatment at Dhaka's Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery after a gas cylinder explosion in Gazipur's Kaliakair has succumbed to his injuries, reports bdnews24.com. The victim, 45-year-old Solaiman Molla, had burns on 95 per cent of his body. “Solaiman had burns on 95 per cent of his body along with respiratory tract burns. This is the first death reported among those injured in the gas cylinder explosion in Kaliakair. Eight teams competed recently in the Southeast regional Envirothon The Envirothon is a natural resources competition for 9-12th grade students. The competition consists of seven testing stations, where participants answer questions on aquatics, forestry, special topics, soils, policy & land use, range, and wildlife. Beatrice took first in place in the regional competition. Tri County scored high enough to claim one of eight wildcard spots and will also compete at state. While the year 2023 has been prolific in terms of rooftop solar capacity expansion, the sector confronts several challenges. He further mentioned that the central banks refinancing scheme is the cheapest source of funding for rooftop solar but 70 environment-friendly projects, including rooftop solar, compete for taka 400 crore which is insufficient for scaling up rooftop solar. Nurul Aktar, President of Bangladesh Solar and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA) said high import duties and low awareness affect rooftop solar implementation. It is also crucial to note that cost of solar technology continues to come down and the attractiveness of rooftop solar increases too.
