The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has prosecuted former EXIM Bank chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder and 20 others over the alleged embezzlement and laundering of Tk 8.58 billion, approved through “abuse of authority” in loan processing. Assistant Director Shahjahan Miraj lodged the case on Sunday at the ACC’s Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1. According to the case documents, the accused recommended approving an incomplete loan proposal for the company Madina Dates and Nuts without proper verification, feasibility study, or stock assessment. Although collateral had been mentioned, the accused allegedly colluded to misuse authority, act dishonestly, and violate fiduciary responsibilities in pushing the loan forward. Charges have been brought under Section 409 of the Penal Code, Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.

Palestinian Ambassador to Bangladesh Yousef SY Ramadan has expressed deep gratitude for the continued support of the Bangladeshi people after a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. The ambassador met with Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday, according to a statement by the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO). Referring to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he said: “There is no food, no medicine. “The Government of Bangladesh has been a great support to Palestine. We are truly grateful.”He thanked the Bangladesh government for joining other Muslim countries in condemning the announcement of the “Greater Israel” map.

A lawyer has served a legal notice to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), demanding an investigation into allegations that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Unfinished Memoirs was ghost-written in exchange for cash and property. Supreme Court lawyer Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib issued the notice on Sunday. The report alleged that each of the 123 members of Javed’s team received a flat and Tk 10 million. According to the television report, Unfinished Memoirs was first published in 2012. Moreover, the huge sums reportedly spent in this process must also be investigated,” the lawyer said.

Three detained at Dhaka airport over gold smugglingThe Airport Armed Police Battalion has detained three people in separate incidents at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport in a single day, seizing 887.5 grammes of gold. On the same day at 1:45pm, APBn detained Monirul Islam, 34, near the Arrival Terminal 2 at Shahjalal Airport. Two separate cases were filed under the Special Powers Act, 1974, at the Dhaka International Airport Police Station in both incidents. APBn also detained a 32-year-old man named Masum Rana at the airport's Arrival Terminal 2 around 8:30am with 199g of gold ornaments. Each of the detainees has long been involved in a gold smuggling ring at the airport, working as a receiver, it said.

Portraits of President Mohammed Shahabuddin have been removed from Bangladesh’s embassies abroad, though the foreign ministry has issued no formal order or explanation. At a briefing on Sunday evening, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam declined to comment when asked, while ministry spokesperson Shah Asif Rahman also sidestepped questions. Senior officers, however, said that after the Aug 5 change of government, most embassies abroad had already taken down portraits of the president and deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside images of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Asking not to be named, one senior officer said the Constitution mandates displaying Bangabandhu’s portrait, but photos of presidents and prime ministers were only a “tradition”. Despite the removals abroad, Shahabuddin’s portrait remained on display at the ministry’s cafeteria in Dhaka until Sunday afternoon.

Students of Chittagong University (CU) have staged a sit-in demanding university accommodation for all students, locking three gates of the administrative building in protest. Al Masnun, a leader of Bangladesh Democratic Students Council, told bdnews24.com that accommodation shortage is a long-standing problem for CU students. As a protest, students have locked the gates of the administrative building,” he said. Acting registrar Saiful Islam acknowledged the incident, saying: “A few students came and padlocked the gates of the administrative building. That is why we locked the administrative building, so the authorities are compelled to listen.”As of 7pm on Sunday, the student sit-in continued.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has uncovered laundered assets worth nearly Tk 400 billion across several countries following an investigation by its Central Intelligence Cell. The revelations were shared at the State Guest House Jamuna in the presence of NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan. The countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, North Macedonia, Malta, St Lucia and Turkey. Yunus called the siphoning of national wealth “a grave act of treason” and urged coordinated action by the Anti-Corruption Commission, CIC and police. “We must set an example so no one dares loot the nation and build assets abroad again,” he said.

Police have arrested Nasir Uddin Sathi, chairman and managing director of private television station MyTV. On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Talebur Rahman said police detained him over a murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. DMP Joint Commissioner (South) Nasirul Islam said a team of detectives arrested Sathi from his Gulshan residence. Sathi is a suspect in a murder case filed with Jatrabari police during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, he added. The private television channel MyTV, owned by VM International Limited, has been broadcasting since 2010.

The Fire Service has subdued the fire that broke out at a petrol pump and CNG filling station in Mohakhali. The blaze started around 7:15pm at Eureka Enterprise near Mohakhali Rail Gate. The Fire Service deployed 10 units, backed by two Air Force teams, and contained the flames by 7:45pm. An employee of the refuelling station, Al Amin, said the fire ignited while fuel was being transferred from a vehicle to the tank. Traffic from Mohakhali towards Jahangir Gate was halted, with one lane of the flyover also closed.

Convicts have burst into tears as the verdict was announced in the murder case of Dr Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai, an assistant professor at the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital, who was killed in 2012. In the dock on Sunday, they clamoured and protested, insisting on their innocence after the court sentenced them to death for the doctor’s killing at his home. Four others were handed prison terms until their death, while another convict was sentenced to life in prison. Among the 10 convicts, Nitai’s driver, Kamrul Hasan Arun, along with Masum Mintu, Sayed Bepari, Bokul Mia and Sayed Mizi, were handed the death penalty and fined Tk 10,000 each. On the night of Aug 23, 2012, he was killed at his home in the hospital’s residential area in Mohakhali.

A fire has broken out in an air-conditioning unit at the Hosaf Shopping Complex near Malibagh in Dhaka, sending thick smoke through the building and creating widespread panic. However, market staff managed to extinguish the fire before their arrival. By then, dense smoke had enveloped the building and surrounding areas, but no injuries were reported. The fire reportedly started on one of the two staircases where shop goods and external AC units were stored. The confined staircase prevented smoke from escaping, allowing it to spread across the market and trigger panic.

Five sentenced to death for 2012 murder of Dr NitaiA Dhaka court has sentenced five people to death for the 2012 murder of Dr Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai, an assistant professor at Dhaka’s National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital. Four others have been handed prison terms until their death, while another convict has been sentenced to life in prison. Each of them has also been sentenced to 10 years in prison and a Tk 5,000 fine for robbery using death threats. The day after the murder, Nitai’s father filed a murder case at Banani Police Station. The police alleged that most of the suspects in the murder were “professional thieves”, while Arun was Nitai’s driver.

A late-night fire has destroyed four warehouses storing fabric scraps in Gazipur city. It took five Fire Service units three and a half hours to take control of the situation, said Mohammad Mamun, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service. The fire is believed to have started at the warehouse of scrap trader Kaiyum before spreading to adjacent facilities owned by Mizan and Abdul Aziz. “We prioritised stopping the flames from reaching nearby homes and warehouses,” Mamun said, adding that large quantities of fabrics and other flammable materials made the task challenging. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be determined following an investigation, officials said.
