The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has apologised after mistakenly introducing the South Korean team as North Korean during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. IOC President Thomas Bach also spoke with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday to convey an apology. North Korea, which is returning to the games for the first time since Rio 2016, has sent 16 athletes. South Korea’s National Olympic Committee said it plans to meet the Paris Olympic organising committee and the IOC to voice their protest. South Korea expressed regret that its delegation of athletes at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday was introduced as from rival North Korea and has demanded assurances from organisers the mistake will not happen again. As the boat carrying South Korean athletes passed on the Seine, the announcer introduced them as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” – the official name of North Korea – in French and English. The announcer used the same introduction when the North Korean delegation passed. “We express regret that the country was introduced as North Korea at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games when the athletes of the Republic of Korea were entering,” it said. North Korea, which is returning to the Games for the first time since Rio 2016, has sent 16 athletes.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A federal judge ruled Friday that a provision in North Carolina’s abortion laws requiring doctors to document the location of a pregnancy before prescribing abortion pills should be blocked permanently, affirming that it was too vague to be enforced reasonably. Unlike challenges in other states like South Carolina and Florida that sought to fully strike down abortion laws, Eagles’ decisions still mean most of North Carolina’s abortion laws updated since the end of Roe v. Wade are in place. Eagles on Friday affirmed blocking the clause in the abortion law requiring physicians to document the “intrauterine location of a pregnancy” before distributing medication abortion. But Eagles wrote the medication in a medication abortion doesn’t exacerbate the risks of complications from an ectopic pregnancy. The lawsuit was initially filed in June 2023 and contained other challenges to the abortion law that the legislature quickly addressed with new legislation.

Chinese ambassador to Morocco Li Changlin said that the country had “become a new hotspot for Chinese companies to invest overseas ”. He said the non-tariff barriers imposed on Chinese electric vehicles by the US and EU complicated direct access to these markets. “By setting up production in Morocco, Chinese companies can bypass these obstacles by producing locally and meeting the necessary standards from the outset. Berry noted that the Inflation Reduction Act rules and US tariffs on Chinese EVs would blunt Chinese EV market penetration. “The US government has been pressuring Mexico, for example, to curb or eliminate incentives for Chinese EV companies to manufacture there,” he said.
