Mali's army and its Russian allies suffered a major setback and significant losses on Saturday while fighting separatists in the country's north, a spokesman for the rebels told AFP. "The Malian army has retreated," a local politician told AFP, citing at least 17 dead in a provisional toll. The army and Wagner are no longer there," he said, referring to the Russian mercenary group. Mossa Ag Inzoma, a member of the separatist movement, claimed that "dozens and dozens" of Wagner fighters and soldiers had been killed and taken prisoner. A junta led by Colonel Assimi Goita took power in 2022 and broke the country's traditional alliance with France, in favor of Russia.

In Sudan, at least 22 people were killed when the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the city of al-Fashir, a pro-democracy activist group said on Saturday, the worst toll after weeks of stalemate on that front in the country’s civil war. The city is the national army’s last remaining position inthe Darfur region of Sudan and a key front in the war with the RSF that has turned Sudan into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The activist group said it had counted 22 bodies and thecasualty toll was expected to rise. The passports were recovered in Omdurman, north of Khartoum, which was recently retaken from the RSF by the Sudanese national army. Some of this support reportedly includes thermobaric bombs being dropped on various targets by drones.

For North Africa, crisis is actually goodHafed Al-GhwellPolitical elite in North Africa have found crises that plague the world to be beneficial for their governments. While Algeria’s government faced criticism for clamping down on journalists and activists, the indispensable role it has played in European energy security has resulted in increased Western favor. South Korea on Saturday expressed disappointment after its athletes were incorrectly introduced as North Korean at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The South Korean Sports ministry expressed “regret over the announcement during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics". The Speaker repeated the same introduction for the North Korean delegation. The Sports Ministry has also directed the foreign ministry to “deliver a strong protest to the French side” on the matter. The blunder comes at a time when ties between North Korea and South Korea have hit a new low with North strengthening its military ties with Russia and South sending K-pop and anti-regime messages via border loudspeakers and conducting live-fire exercises on border islands.

In 2009, Morocco sent humanitarian relief to Gaza inhabitants and received 200 wounded who benefited from necessary medical care. In 2018, another medical & surgical field hospital of the Royal Armed Forces was deployed in Gaza. Upon royal instructions, Morocco sent last March large quantities of humanitarian aid directly to Gazans and Al-Quds population, in coordination with the Egyptian authorities – via the Rafah crossing. Four months later, the North African Kingdom sent 40 tons of medical aid to Gazans. Like the previous relief operations sent to Palestinians, a large part of the aid was paid by the King from his personal funds.

Morocco is poised to become Africa's largest vehicle producer, overtaking South Africa, which has long been the continent's undisputed leader. As reported by Le Matin, the study projects that vehicle production in Morocco will reach approximately 614,000 units this year, while in South Africa it will fall to 591,000 units. In addition, the Moroccan industry benefits from the interest of Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), which seek to maintain their access to the European market. On the other hand, South Africa faces significant challenges that are holding back its production. In contrast, South Africa faces a less favourable operating environment, marked by challenges related to emissions, labour, trade and transport issues.

South Korea wrongly introduced as North Korea at OlympicsOlympic organisers have issued a "deep apology" after South Korea's athletes were mistakenly introduced as North Korea at the opening ceremony in Paris. As the excited, flag-waving team floated down the River Seine, both French and English announcers introduced them as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" - the official name of North Korea. The same name was then used - correctly - when North Korea's delegation sailed past. The two Koreas have been divided since the end of World War Two, with tensions between the states further escalating recently.

PARIS (AP) — Olympic Games organizers said they “deeply apologize” for introducing South Korea’s athletes as North Korea during the opening ceremony in Paris. South Korea is the Republic of Korea. Bach called South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday and apologized over the incident, Yoon’s office said in a statement. The Korean peninsula has been bitterly divided into South Korea and North Korea since the end of World War II in 1945. The blue sign on the boat carrying the South Korean athletes did show the correct name.
