After agreeing to normalise relations with Israel in 2020, Rabat and Khartoum have had varying degrees of progress. In October and December 2020, Sudan and Morocco respectively announced that they had agreed to normalise with Israel. But, while diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel blossomed into full cooperation in various sectors, Khartoum’s agreement with Israel remained nominal due to the outbreak of civil war between rival generals in April. Rabat and Israel’s close collaborationMorocco’s relations with Israel stand in stark contrast as the two have deepened their intelligence cooperation, arms and technology trade, and engaged in joint military drills. “Yes to negotiations between Israel and Sudan, yes to recognition of Israel and yes to peace between the states and between the peoples,” Cohen said.

To great fanfare and some raised eyebrows, the BRICS grouping agreed to expand its membership at its summit in South Africa last month. Less noticed were the longstanding tensions between two other pending members, Egypt and Ethiopia, over the latter’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project, which is in the final stages of completion. In offering both countries membership, BRICS has absorbed a complex regional conflict into its midst, raising questions about the group’s potential to shape global affairs. Ethiopia’s unilateral move exacerbates long-standing Egyptian fears of losing access to vital Nile waters and highlights the current failures of diplomacy aimed at resolving the dispute. Soon after both countries were invited to join BRICS at the August summit, tripartite talks about the GERD between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan—also a downstream state—continued, suggesting renewed impetus in resolving the dispute.

To our thinking, modern desert dust storms have been overlooked as a public health crisis. This work includes analyzing satellite images, creating simulation models for predicting dust particle transport, and identifying each dust storm’s particle content. Public health recommendationsWe offer several practices here that we believe would help public health agencies successfully tackle the problem of polluted dust storms. One physical catalog for dust storm particles already exists at the 19th-century dust storm archive kept by the Natural History Museum at Humboldt University in Berlin. According to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, the recent arrival of thousands of migrants in Lampedusa meant Germany would take in people after all. We will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances, and not the smugglers and traffickers.

Maintaining the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Marrakech would give a much-needed push of support to Morocco’s earthquake-affected tourism sector, tourist operators say. Morocco’s central bank governor Abdellatif Jouahri said at a preparatory conference in Rabat that the annual meetings are still planned for October 9-15. In the aftermath of the earthquake, many tourists cancelled their bookings in Marrakech and its surroundings out of panic. Holding the IMF-WB annual meetings would send a message of reassurance as at least 15,000 people are expected to stay in Marrakech hotels during the event. The best way for the two institutions to help Morocco would be to hold the event in Marrakech as planned.
