TUNIS - Tunisia has extended the quota system for drinking water and a ban of use in agriculture until further notice, the agriculture ministry said on Saturday, in response to a drought that has lasted five years. In March, the North African country began cutting off water at night and banned its use in agriculture, a decision that Tunisia had said would continue until Sept. 30. It has also banned the use of drinking water to wash cars, water green areas and clean streets and public places. An Eritrean man was stabbed to death in Netanya on Saturday during a brawl that left eight other Eritreans injured. One of the injured, a man in his 30s, was in serious condition, and the rest of the casualties were in light-to-moderate condition. Police suspect that the man who was murdered opposed the regime in Eritrea and was stabbed by the government’s supporters. For most Arab countries, Africa remains an enigma: a dark continent as remote as the Arctic Circle. Yes, the Arabs had historical links with East and West Africa — albeit sometimes, it’s not something to discuss. Almost half of the Arab world is in North Africa, which we tend to disassociate from the rest of the continent. However, governments in North Africa share something essential with the rest of the vast and varied continent that is Africa. What happens in Western Africa, East Africa, and the Sahara region directly impacts Arab North African countries.

In the case of Tunisia, the EU and Tunisian President Kaïs Saied signed a deal called the “Comprehensive Partnership Package”. In fact, the EU’s past and present trade policies towards Tunisia are much to blame for the misery of small-scale farmers and agricultural workers. The unequal economic exchange in agricultural trade relations between Tunisia and the EU is also apparent in the trade in olive oil, one of Tunisia’s top exports. Trade policies favouring European markets will not improve the socioeconomic situation for Tunisians in rural areas. If the EU really wants to address what it calls a “migration crisis”, it needs to rethink its extractive trade policies with the rest of the world, and not enter agreements that only lead to more precarity.

At a time when cereal exports are on the rise, Morocco plans to import 2 million tonnes of soft wheat to combat drought problems. For the 2022-2023 crop year, Morocco announced a cereal production of 5.51 million tonnes, a significant increase of 61.8% over the previous season. The North African country's production reached 3.4 million tonnes, exceeding the 2020-2021 season by 1 million tonnes. To address this situation, Morocco announced changes to wheat import subsidies to encourage companies to import more wheat from other markets.
