Morocco’s customs revenue hit a milestone of 13.26 billion dollars last year, up 1.2% from a year earlier, offering a boon for an expansionary state budget. The performance came on the back of higher custom duties as well as taxes on manufactured tobacco, the customs administration said. The record was 1.59 billion dirhams higher than expected in the appropriation bill. The same year, Moroccan customs seized 2 million counterfeited items, compared with 1.8 million a year earlier. Higher customs revenue together with more tax receipts are expected to help narrow Morocco’s budget deficit to 4% this year, after 4.29% last year.

Fossils discovered on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe have unveiled a new dinosaur species, Musankwa sanyatiensis. This discovery marks only the fourth dinosaur species named from Zimbabwe, with research published in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. Musankwa sanyatiensis and its relativesThe dinosaur was named after the houseboat “Musankwa,” which means “boy close to marriage” in the Tonga dialect. However, most known dinosaur fossils come from just ten countries, primarily in the northern hemisphere, leading to a sparse representation of African dinosaur diversity. “Based on where it sits on the dinosaur family tree, Musankwa sanyatiensis is the first dinosaur of its kind from Zimbabwe,” Dr. Chapelle explains.

The Media Line: Irregular Migration to Italy Dramatically Decreases as Migrants Accumulate in TunisiaIrregular Migration to Italy Dramatically Decreases as Migrants Accumulate in TunisiaAs a result of the Italian-Tunisian partnership to mitigate migration, thousands of would-be migrants to Europe are stuck in Tunisia amid rising anti-immigrant rhetoric and violenceBy Debbie Mohnblatt/The Media LineItaly has experienced a significant decrease in arrivals from Africa following the launch of a partnership with Tunisia meant to reduce migration from the northern African nation. In April, Italy and Tunisia agreed on a plan to mitigate irregular migration, which has been a foreign policy priority for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “This could be a temporary respite, or migration flows could simply move to another country,” Fabiani told The Media Line. Most of the irregular migrants who arrive in Tunisia are unable to reach Europe and lack the means to return to their home countries. “This antimigrant campaign is supported by the president, who rejects their presence while de facto playing the role of security agent for Europe,” Fabiani said.
