A Guardian investigation has found that drug cartels are exploiting hundreds of unaccompanied migrant African children as foot soldiers in Europe’s expanding cocaine trade. The situation hasn’t gone unnoticed by the authorities with EU police forces reporting widespread exploitation in cities like Paris and Brussels, where children are subjected to torture and rape if they fail to sell enough drugs. According to the report, the cocaine cartels are taking advantage of the “unlimited” supply of vulnerable children, who they traffic from North Africa for use in their booming trade. Following an assessment by EU police forces, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Spain, have the strongest cases of this exploitation the recruited minors running into hundreds. However, other Guardian sources believe that the numbers could run into the thousands.

The European Union’s migration deals with Tunisia and Mauritania have proved to be controversial, with the former strongly criticized for fundamental rights violations of migrants stranded in the north African country, while the latter has not discouraged thousands of Africans from increasingly going through Mauritania to reach European shores. In July 2023, the EU signed with Tunisia a ‘Memorandum of Understanding on a Strategic and Global Partnership’, mainly aimed at stemming migration in exchange for strengthened cooperation in other policy areas. In April 2024, the EU granted €210 million in aid to Mauritania, nearly €60 million of which was earmarked to fight illegal migrants trying to reach the Canary Islands in a bid to eventually reach continental Europe. But both deals were met with strong criticism from both civil society and institutional bodies such as the European Parliament, the European Ombudsman, and several EU member states. As a recent analysis in the Netherlands International Law Review points out, the EU policy trend of externalizing migration control through partnerships with third countries generate concerns about EU’s complicity in the fundamental rights violations of migrants.

On the night of June 3, vast parts of northern Israel went up in flames after Hezbollah fired rockets on the area. It is increasingly evident that without a cease-fire, the situation at the northern border could rapidly deteriorate into a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah. The two fronts have been linked from the very start of the war. Hezbollah entered the conflict on Oct. 8, firing on Israeli military positions in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights less than 24 hours after the Hamas attack from Gaza. One bill sponsor said it’s appropriate for companies that produced such chemicals and released them into the environment to cover the costs for cleaning up the water. Only a PFAS manufacturer can be a “responsible party.” The bill also makes clear that a public water system that receives reimbursements must lower customer water rates if they were raised to pay for abatement efforts. PFAS chemicals have been produced for a number of purposes — they helped eggs slide across non-stick frying pans, ensured that firefighting foam suffocates flames and helped clothes withstand the rain and keep people dry. The company has been required to provide water filtration systems for homes with contaminated wells, for example. The North Carolina Manufacturers Alliance opposes the bill, while the American Chemistry Council expressed concerns about details, their representatives said.

Greece shut the ancient Acropolis tourist site, suspended schools and stationed medics across Athens on Wednesday as it faced the first heatwave of the summer. Many primary schools and nurseries across the country will shut for two days. Last year, rising temperatures fuelled deadly wildfires and erratic rains caused some of the worst flooding on record, both of which damaged crops and livelihoods. In Greece, fires began earlier than expected this year, including one in March. After last year's destructive wildfires, including on the island of Rhodes which prompted the biggest evacuation in peace time, Greece has scaled up its preparations by hiring more staff and stepping up training.

Iran bought 300 tons of uranium from Niger to be used for its nuclear program in exchange of drones and surface-to-air missiles, London-based media Iran International reported. The news came in a long report earlier this month by Iranian-American reporter Banafsheh Zand, echoing an earlier report on Africa Intelligence that raised secret talks between Tehran and Niamey to acquire uranium. Niger military junta denied the transaction, reportedly worth $56 million, as Iran seeks the concentrated yellow uranium substance to speed up its nuclear weapons program. French Le Monde also confirmed the deal between Iran and Niger, noting the mine in Arlit where concentrated uranium is abundant is extracted by French company Orano. Meanwhile Niger tilts closer to Russia as does its neighbors.
