Nearly 750,000 people are on the brink of starvation in war-torn Sudan, where the conflict between rival army factions aggravates the humanitarian situation, the global authority on famine said. UN and international NGOs have previously urged action to prevent famine in Sudan since December. Some 2 million people have crossed the border to flee the ongoing civil war between the paramilitary RSF and the army, UNHCR said. The UN said it has received only 17% of the 2.7 billion dollars needed to address the humanitarian situation in the country.

For every step forward Morocco makes to foster ties with the Sahel, Algeria makes a step backwards, says an analysis published by the Washington-based Wilson Center. In contrast, Algeria had more self-serving foreign policy goals in dealing with the Sahel centered on gathering support for the Polisario separatists and their anachronistic agenda, leading Algiers to self-isolation as it pursues a chimera of a Maghreb union without Morocco, the analyst said. “Looking into the future, as the African continent moves towards greater economic pragmatism and sheds ideological relics of the past, Algeria is on a path of further isolation, making it unable to promote or benefit from regional integration,” she said. After highlighting the long presence by Morocco’s major banks and companies in the Sahel, El Yaaqoubi pointed to the relevance of the Atlantic initiative, launched by Morocco’s King, to help landlocked Sahel countries access maritime global trade and promote regional integration. She said the initiative cements a Moroccan “pragmatic” approach to its ties with the Sahel, as Rabat also sees to further boost influence through regional integration energy projects, including the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.

Though Ghazouani is widely expected to win the election, his main opposition is Biram Dah Abeid, a Black anti-slavery activist who has accused him of gross mismanagement of the country. Mauritania is no stranger to human rights abuse accusations, as it was the last country in the world to abolish slavery in 1981. But the practice continues, human rights groups said, with around 149,000 people in modern slavery in this nation of less than 5 million, according to the 2023 Global Slavery Index. “Given the status of slavery in society, the status of a slave, the status of a free man, and especially the status of the men who hold these slaves.
