North Korea cracking down on wedding dresses and slang - reportWedding dresses need to be traditional, like this bride's outfit from 2019North Korea is carrying out a widespread crackdown on everything from wedding dresses to slang as it seeks to counter the South's influence, a new report has revealed. It includes the case of a 22-year-old who was executed after admitting listening to South Korean music and distributing films, first reported by the BBC last year. North Korea described last year's report as "slander and fabrication", but has yet to respond to the new document. People's phones are also being searched and checked for slang from South Korea in messages and contacts, it adds. Sunglasses have also been deemed counter-revolutionary, the report says, despite North Korean leader Kim Jong Un being know to don a pair.

UNITED NATIONS — The head of a research organization that has been tracing weapons used in attacks in Ukraine since 2018 told the United Nations Security Council on Friday it has “irrefutably” established that ballistic missile remnants found in Ukraine came from North Korea. “Following the initial documentation, our teams inspected three additional identical DPRK missiles that struck Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia earlier this year,” Leff said. AdvertisementThe council discussed illegal arms transfers from North Korea at the request of France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. And he said that, in addition to the dozens of missiles Russia has transferred from the DPRK, it has also unlawfully transferred over 11,000 containers of munitions. Advertisement“As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has a responsibility to uphold and strengthen international peace and security,” Wood said.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina trial judges have dismissed a lawsuit challenging redrawn legislative and congressional district lines on the argument that they run afoul of an indirect constitutional right to “fair elections.” The judges said a recent affirmation still applies — that redistricting policy decisions are left to the General Assembly, not the courts. In a 2023 ruling by the state Supreme Court, the GOP majority said the judiciary lacked authority to declare redistricting maps as illegal partisan gerrymanders. They also said that redistricting was a political matter the judicial branch must stay out of, save for challenges on specific limitations. The “fair elections” lawsuit focuses on a handful of districts. Chief Justice Paul Newby, a Republican who wrote the prevailing opinion in the 2023 redistricting ruling, chooses three-judge panels to hear such cases.

The dispute underscores the complexities of verifying North Korea's weapons development, which continues to advance despite severe international sanctions. If North Korea's latest claims are true, it would represent significant progress in their missile programme. For some time now, experts have floated the possibility of North Korea eventually developing MIRV capabilities. They also said North Korea's pictures purportedly showing the warheads and decoy separating from the missile were actually pictures of an intercontinental ballistic missile test carried out in March. GIMHAE AIR BASE, South Korea — The United States wrapped up its first multidomain exercise with Japan and South Korea in the East China Sea on Saturday, a step forward in Washington’s efforts to strengthen and lock in its security partnerships with key Asian allies in the face of growing threats from North Korea and China. The exercise, which is expected to expand in years to come, was also intended to improve the countries’ abilities to share missile warnings — increasingly important as North Korea tests ever-more sophisticated systems. AdvertisementSouth Korea’s military said a joint analysis by South Korean and U.S. authorities assessed that the North Korean missile launch failed. “They’re trying to institutionalize as many of these habits of cooperation while they can.”AdvertisementTensions with North Korea are at their highest point in years, with the pace of Kim Jong Un’s weapons programs intensifying, despite heavy international sanctions. It claims both the self-governing island of Taiwan and virtually the entirety of the South China Sea as its own territory, and has increasingly turned to its military to press those claims.

Since the Camp David accords, Egypt has been among the U.S.’s most reliable security partners in the Middle East and North Africa. While reforms to U.S. security cooperation could be part of the answer to this erosion, there are a few small, low-cost steps which could help create a better climate for joint security cooperation. First, the U.S. should consider drafting a bilateral security cooperation agreement with the Egyptians. Egyptian security enhances American security and advances U.S. interests in a region where American interests have taken a beating. We can improve Egypt’s security at minimal expense.

NAIROBI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- African ministers on Thursday launched the Regional Maritime Transport Policy for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa to boost maritime security. Salim Mvurya, Kenya's cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, told a forum in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the policy provides procedures to address emerging maritime security threats such as illicit drugs, piracy and armed robbery at sea by enhancing surveillance. "The policy will help to foster a secure and safe maritime environment through regional collaboration and sustainable practices," Mvurya said during the third meeting of ministers responsible for shipping and maritime affairs of countries in eastern, southern and northern Africa. The former "Camp 53" near Wetherby housed Italian prisoners of war captured during the Allies' campaign in North Africa in 1941. The derelict camp at Kirk Deighton has been owned by the same family since the 1970s. However, councillors refused the proposal and said that housing would damage the "historic social narrative" of the camp. A previous scheme for five houses on the site was turned down in 2017 and dismissed at appeal.
