US wants Africa to shun North Korea

The US is lobbying African governments to sever ties with North Korea, saying the country’s relentless pursuit of nuclear power is posing a global threat to international security. This follows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s statement on January 1, in which he expressed North Korea’s commitment to becoming a nuclear power. Scott said that the fact that North Korea continued to reinforce its declarations of intent to strike the US mainland made the US government treat the matter with urgency. “Many governments in Africa have long-standing relationships with North Korea that warrant a serious reassessment. "We want to work with you to send a clear message to North Korea that the international community is united and has spoken that it will never accept North Korea as a nuclear power,” he said.
