For DepEd, Sy is a “champion of education and social responsibility” for establishing the SM Foundation in 1983 to “support and empower communities through education and other development initiatives.”The DepEd noted that since 2001, the Foundation’s School Building Program has “provided hundreds of schools all over the country with buildings complete with furniture and fixtures, enabling a conducive environment for better learning outcomes.”DepEd noted that the SM Foundation is also one of its “pioneer and constant partners” in the Adopt-a-School Program – “providing scholarships, teacher training, school supplies, financial literacy, ICT [information and communications technology] and multimedia packages.”Sy, DepEd said, will be “fondly remembered as a valuable partner who invested in the education of the country’s future leaders and nation-builders.” According to earlier reports, Sy Sr. — considered the “richest man in the Philippines” — has “died peacefully in his sleep” on Saturday, January 19.
