- Mohammed Aty/ReutersBrent crude oil surged past $100 a barrel Thursday before dipping below that landmark threshold, though oil prices were still up on the day as further attacks on ships in the Gulf spooked energy traders. “The war in the Middle East is creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market,” the IEA said in its monthly oil market report. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was up 5% to trade at around $96 a barrel. Prices have stayed high despite 32 of the world’s biggest economies, including the United States, agreeing Wednesday to add 400 million barrels of oil to the global market, the biggest-ever release of emergency oil stocks. Attacks on ships, oil output cutsIran has ramped up attacks on oil tankers, striking two foreign oil tankers in Iraqi waters Thursday.

The United States, an IEA member, then sold a further 180 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve over a six-month period that year. The near-blockade means that some 15 million barrels of crude oil and 5 million barrels of other oil products are choked off from global markets every day, according to Birol. Indeed, the IEA announcement has done little to dampen oil prices. Oil prices seesawOil prices have been on a rollercoaster over the past 48 hours. The near-blockade of the waterway has caused crude prices to soar, with Brent still about 23% above the $73 level it was trading at before the conflict began.

LOADING ERROR LOADINGPresent Donald Trump got roasted for following the lead of conflict-hungry Republican “warmongers” and “neocon boomers” during a panel debate about the war in Iran on Tuesday’s episode of “CNN NewsNight.”“Back in the day, Trump used to call Lindsey Graham and his ilk warmongers,” host Abby Phillip remarked. “He used to suggest that it was like Dick Cheney and Lindsey Graham were in a cabal together. “You wanna know what makes me so angry listening to people like Lindsey Graham and listening to the $1 billion a day toll?” he asked. Advertisement“Is that the neocon boomers surrounding Donald Trump are mortgaging my generation’s future for another endless, maybe endless, but another very expensive Middle Eastern war,” said Mockler, who is 23. The Affordable Care Act subsidies that they were arguing over were $50 billion.
Mark Gordon on Monday signed ban on abortions after embryotic cardiac activity can be detected, generally at about six weeks’ gestation and often before women know they’re pregnant. The signing makes Wyoming the fifth state to bar abortions at that stage of pregnancy, along with Florida, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina. Thirteen other states bar abortion at all stages of pregnancy, with some exceptions. Abortion access in Wyoming has varied in recent years, in part because the state’s sole clinic was set on fire in 2022, delaying its opening. The state Health Department says that in 2024, the last year for which records have been compiled, there were 625 abortions in the state.
The investigation, which the administration previewed last month, will be conducted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. President Donald Trump relied on the same provision in his first term to impose sweeping tariffs on Chinese products, which largely remain in effect. Greer’s announcement came less than three weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that many of the tariffs Trump imposed last year, relying on a 1977 economic emergency powers law, were unconstitutional. At the time, the president vowed to continue his campaign to reshape global trade using other legal authorities. The Trump administration has negotiated trade deals with most of the countries it now plans to investigate, raising the prospect of new tariffs on their goods.
