LOADING ERROR LOADINGMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Justice Department is investigating whether Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have impeded federal immigration enforcement through public statements they have made, two people familiar with the matter said Friday. The investigation, which both Walz and Frey said was a bullying tactic meant to threaten political opposition, focused on potential violation of a conspiracy statute, the people said. The investigation comes during a weekslong immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and St. Paul that the Department of Homeland Security has called its largest recent immigration enforcement operation, resulting in more than 2,500 arrests. In response to reports of the investigation, Walz said in a statement: “Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin.

Democrats are seizing on the moment to demand reforms to ICE as a condition for their support on any new DHS funding. In the Senate, Republicans need at least seven Democrats to vote with them to advance a DHS funding bill, in order to clear a filibuster. A continuing resolution “doesn’t do anything to constrain the way that they’re acting lawlessly,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Tuesday. A yearlong spending bill for DHS is the one shot Democrats have at putting any guardrails on ICE in the foreseeable future. “I feel cautiously optimistic,” House Appropriations Committee chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told reporters Tuesday about passing a DHS funding bill.

President Donald Trump slammed CNN as he cranked out posts on Friday night — but simultaneously basked in their praise of a policy that is credited with lowering mortgage rates. “Even Fake News CNN is praising the DROP in Mortgage Interest Rates!” Trump wrote in the late-night message. VANESSA YURKEVICH, CNN BUSINESS & POLITICS CORRESPONDENT: Yes, we’re talking about the lowest level in more than three years. That is down significantly from a year ago when mortgage rates were above 7 percent. All right, Vanessa Yurkevich …YURKEVICH: That — that is for sure.

Many Sikh men traditionally bear the surname Singh, or lion in Punjabi, while by tradition Sikh women are Kaurs, princesses. She picked Gita Kaur, whose grandmother had kept Gita virtually cloistered in the family house in Nairobi until she was 19. Next year, Ravinder and Gita will have been married for half a century, the trepidations of youth dispelled by time. “I won’t grow old.”But he is growing old, and wonders what will become of the line of Singh watchmakers once he’s gone.

After Fox News pushed the Trump administration’s propaganda in its coverage of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent’s deadly January 7 shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, the network has used its chyrons during the ensuing protests to demonize demonstrators, accuse Democratic officials of inciting violence, and declare “Dems at war with America itself.” Fox’s characterization of the protests serves to suggest a pretext for President Donald Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act, which he threatened to do in a January 15 Truth Social post.

Like Trump a dealmaker - in Powell’s case from his years at the Carlyle Group private equity firm - the Fed chief has no reason to tip his hand. AdvertisementFederal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks at the Federal Reserve, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, in Washington. Trump has repeatedly demanded large interest cuts, castigating Powell and the Fed for being too slow to lower borrowing costs. Billionaire developer Rick Caruso will not run for Los Angeles mayor or California governor, after months of speculation that he would seek one of the two posts. Political consultant Tim Rosales said he was surprised by the announcement, calling it particularly unexpected because he saw signs that Caruso would run for governor. “Running for California governor is one of the hardest things you can do in politics,” he said. The last question mark is L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who said people have been asking her to run for mayor. Bass also faces a challenge from her left with Rae Huang, a community organizer and reverend, announcing a run for mayor in November.

Trump and some governors seek to help consumers and data centers. (GARY CORONADO Los Angeles Times)President Trump and the governors of several U.S. Northeastern states agreed to push for an emergency wholesale electricity auction that would compel technology companies to effectively fund new power plants. The Trump administration and some U.S. governors plan to direct grid operator PJM Interconnection LLC to hold an auction for tech companies to bid on 15-year contracts for new electricity generation capacity. If the auction proceeds as envisaged, tech giants would pay for power over the duration of the contracts, whether they use the electricity or not, providing secure revenues for years in a market notorious for price volatility and generator bankruptcies. NEWSOM'S proposed budget includes a projected $3-billion deficit. -THIS Los Angeles Times article rightly highlights the uncertainty surrounding California’s finances, but it stops short of squarely addressing the central issue: responsibility. Gavin Newsom has been in office for more than five years, long enough that today’s budget reality cannot be blamed on predecessors or unforeseen circumstances alone. Under his watch, California swung from historic surpluses to a projected multibillion-dollar deficit, and voters deserve a candid accounting of how that happened.

Donald Trump's second presidential term has seen a rapid rise in the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. AdvertisementOnce a relatively obscure branch of law enforcement, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have fast become the sharp point of Donald Trump's mass deportation initiative. Such a significant upscaling of a branch of law enforcement is unusual — and unprecedented in the history of ICE, which was formed in 2002. This media and social media push, which uses recruitment tools that lean heavily on key Trump messaging, has proved controversial. Though not without its detractors, the recruitment drive has worked, on some levels at least, concluded Hamilton.
