It may surprise you to hear that my husband doesn’t have any feelings one way or another about my work. I say work first because we both honestly love our careers more than anything else in the world, including each other. (AP Photo/Ng Han Guan)HONG KONG -- China's economy expanded at a 5% annual pace in 2025, buoyed by strong exports despite U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed to extend a truce in their bruising tariffs war, also helping to alleviate pressure on China’s exports. But China's exports to the U.S. still fell 20% last year. Kang Yi, head of China’s National Bureau of Statistics, on Monday told reporters that China’s economy had sustained "steady progress in 2025 despite multiple pressures” and has “solid foundations" in countering risks. The Rhodium Group, a think tank, said last month it expected China’s economy to grow only by 2.5% to 3% last year.

U.S. overdose deaths fell through most of last year, suggesting a lasting improvement in an epidemic that had been worsening for decades. Federal data released Wednesday showed that overdose deaths have been falling for more than two years — the longest drop in decades — but also that the decline was slowing. Overdose deaths fell in 45 statesDeaths began steadily climbing in the 1990s with overdoses involving opioid painkillers, followed by waves of deaths from heroin and — more recently — illicit fentanyl. The new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data run through August 2025 and represents the first update of monthly provisional drug overdose deaths since the federal government shutdown. The recent deceleration of overdose deaths could be because producers in Canada and Mexico found alternative sources, Reuter and his colleagues think.

It was 1941, and Franklin D. Roosevelt had been encouraged to build a bomb shelter at the White House in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At the time, “no public acknowledgment was made of there being a bomb shelter under construction, only the East Wing,” according to White House Historical Association historian Bill Seale. Nixon during a press conference in the East Wing of the White House in January 1969. The White House declined CNN’s request for comment. A ‘tomb-like’ shelterThough Roosevelt’s construction was initially envisioned as a bomb shelter, underground facilities beneath the East Wing evolved over time to serve multiple functions.

Trump carried Iowa in all three of his White House runs, with a bigger share of the vote each time. And I think Trump has proved himself. But the new county Democratic chairwoman, Michele Pegg, said voter registration drives and door-to-door canvassing are on the horizon. Knock on a door.”This story has been updated to clarify Trump’s share of the vote in Iowa in the past three presidential elections.

The U.S. leader seems to revel in strolling through the Davos Congress Center and among executives who back his business-minded, money-making approach to politics. Oxfam, the world-renowned advocacy group, issued a report ahead of the Davos event which showed that billionaire wealth rose by more than 16% last year, three times faster than the past five-year average, to more than $18 trillion. US President Donald Trump told Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer feels bound “to think purely of Peace” because the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland,” Trump said in his note to Støre. Although the US has been the bedrock of Euro-Atlantic security for decades, and spent far more on defense in that period than any other NATO member, many NATO allies participated in recent US wars. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado holds a press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, a day after the award ceremony, in Oslo, Norway, on December 11. The Trump administration, meanwhile, raised the stakes further this month by opening a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. That fight isn’t before the Supreme Court, but it is likely to sit in the back of the justices’ minds. Rather than deciding the appeal on its emergency docket, the Supreme Court agreed to hear oral arguments. ‘Logically incoherent’Lawyers for fired leaders at other independent agencies for months sounded a warning they hoped would give the Supreme Court pause. The Federal Reserve did cut its benchmark interest rate in September, October and December — citing economic indicators, not presidential pressure.
