In 2021, Ferguson described Trump as a ‘demagogue and would-be tyrant’. A recent interview with the Times gives some insight into how Ferguson and others have learned to stop worrying and love the Donald. The storming of the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 is the biggest obstacle to any conversion to a pro-Trump position. And, as many historians and social scientists have been saying, the norms and institutions of ‘the system’ are not self-reinforcing. As Daniel Drezner has pointed out, there is little evidence that Trump’s different threats concerning North and South Korea yielded much.

“Treat yourself to a spa day,” Wolownik suggested. Moderate drinkers may have trouble sleeping after the first day of not drinking, and after day three, some hangover-like symptoms may occur. “Drinking affects your sleep pattern,” Wolownik said, explaining that drinking to intoxication may reduce REM sleep, which can lead to less dreaming. “REM sleep is what gets our tensions and frustrations out for the day,” Wolownik said. Then there is additional HMO licensing, covering smaller homes shared by three to four people who also share facilities. Finally, selective licensing under Part 3 of the 2004 Act covers all privately rented properties in a designated area. There are two main consequences for landlords renting out

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Your correspondents (Jan 14-16) have emphasised the lack of democracy and council responsiveness to those affected by the imposition of low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs). What is almost as bad, at least here in Southwark, is the indifference of the authorities to the resulting effects on the traffic network. The council, despite having a statutory “network management duty” to secure “expeditious movement of traffic”, did not undertake any traffic diversion studies before imposing a road closure on a main distributory road in the middle of Dulwich as well as a wide array of timed closures. One result has been huge congestion at certain times of the day on diversion routes, which has required the rescheduling of affected bus routes.

From The Times: January 17, 1925Lieutenant-Colonel JHM Cornwall, who has recently returned from Constantinople, lectured last night before the Central Asian Society, at the Royal United Service Institution, Whitehall, on “Turkey To-day”. Speaking of the exchange of populations carried out last year under the Treaty of Lausanne, Lieutenant-Colonel Cornwall said the most striking thing in Turkey to-day was the alteration in the economic state of the country. The Greeks who had been sent back to Greece were the merchants, shopkeepers, cobblers, carpenters, and blacksmiths. Greece had made a net gain of 1,000,000 industrious people which Turkey had lost. According to the Times, Bezos has been looking to shift the paper’s focus for years now to attract more right-leaning readers from the heartland. Since Trump’s November win, Amazon has donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund and l icensed a documentary on Melania Trump for $40 million.

Britain’s government on Thursday bowed to pressure and announced new investigations into child sexual exploitation and abuse, less than a month after Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul, used his social media platform X to highlight the issue in a series of vitriolic posts. Speaking in Parliament, Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, said she had commissioned a rapid three-month audit into the “current scale and nature of gang-based exploitation across the country” that would examine data on the ethnicity of perpetrators. She also said that the government would support and help fund up to five local inquiries into the issue of so-called grooming gangs — groups of men who were found to have sexually exploited thousands of girls in Britain, some as young as 11, in the 2000s and early 2010s. Most of the perpetrators were of British Pakistani heritage. The scandal, which was widely covered in the British media in the 2010s and has already been the subject of local and national inquiries, spanned a number of towns and cities in which mostly white girls were exploited, assaulted and raped by groups of men.
