War creates energy price risks, warn executivesA US flag flutters in the wind as an oil tanker sits anchored off the California coast. Markets swung wildly after the conflict in Iran effectively closed oil and gas shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this risk, Mr Win believes the conflict is unlikely to expand beyond Iran's territory into a regional war. OIL PRICE CONCERNSMr Kobsak said risks remain elevated as the shipping lane is only about three kilometres wide. Channarong Kitinartintranee, head of investment strategy at the CIO Office of Kasikornbank, said the current level of oil prices would not "significantly affect the economy, as inflation could rise by 0.4%".

Oil prices surge as Mideast war rages, stocks fall on US jobsBrent North Sea Crude has surged past $90. (Photo: AFP)NEW YORK - Crude prices surged Friday on mounting fears about oil supply disruption amid the Middle East war, while equities retreated on poor US hiring data. Maritime traffic has all but dried up through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies run. The world's biggest economy shed 92,000 jobs last month, down from revised job growth of 126,000 in January, said the Labor Department. But analysts have said higher oil prices complicate that picture.

Middle East war a new shock for financial marketsSmoke rises from the site of air strikes in the Iranian capital. (Photo: AFP)PARIS (FRANCE) - The outbreak of war in the Middle East has sent shockwaves through financial markets, with energy prices soaring and stocks sliding, just a year after US President Donald Trump's tariff onslaught rattled investors. Meanwhile, crude oil prices have jumped by more than a quarter, with a barrel of international reference contract Brent crude shooting over $90 on Friday. But as an oil-exporting country, the United States is not as exposed to a rise in global energy prices. Moreover, stock exchanges were at or near record levels before the war broke out, while oil and gas prices were low.

Shortage of psychiatrists bodes ill for mental health(Photo: 123RF)The country is grappling with a critical shortage of psychiatrists, with fewer than 900 specialists now working nationwide, according to the Public Health Ministry. Current figures show the country only has 845 psychiatrists, equivalent to 1.28 per 100,000 population and far below the World Health Organization's standard of 10 per 100,000. Hospitals under the Office of the Permanent Secretary will collaborate with the Department of Mental Health (DoMH) to serve as training institutes, with inspectors and service plan leaders supporting hospital selection. The cabinet has already endorsed a five-year development plan (2023–2030) to strengthen the mental health system, targeting a production of about 30 psychiatrists annually, raising the ratio to 1.7 per 100,000 population. DoMH director-general Dr Kittisak Aksornwong reported that around 13.4 million Thais have experienced mental health problems, with 2.9 million patients seeking services in 2023.
