The company is the flagship subsidiary of the giant Samsung group, by far the largest of the family-controlled empires known as chaebols that dominate business in South Korea, the world's 12th largest economy. Samsung Electronics estimated sales for the July-September period at 73 trillion won, up 9.0% year-on-year -- a record for any quarter, a spokeswoman told AFP. Samsung's latest earnings estimate came after Lee Jae-yong, its vice-chairman and the de-facto leader of the wider Samsung group, walked out of prison in August.

However "complex" the audience believes Baylor is, ultimately, he's still the main character and the only individual whose perspective defines the whole movie. And indeed, the performance of a talented actor ensures the audience is glued to the screen even when the plot gets tangled.

SET outperforms regional peers in 2021The SET Index rose by 10.8% during the first nine months this year, exceeding the average for the region and other emerging markets, spurred by an increase in vaccinations and a decrease in the daily infection rate. Industries that outperformed the SET Index compared with the end of 2020 were industrial products, technology, agriculture and food, and service sectors. According to the SET, foreign investors were net buyers for a second consecutive month in September, tallying 10.8 billion baht. However, they remained net sellers of 79.2 billion baht during the first nine months. The SET also recorded the highest value of initial public offerings in the region at US$3.33 billion for the first nine months.

FTI to help startups, SMEs with fundraisingThe Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is preparing to help its startup and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) members raise funds in the capital market to help support the development of their businesses. FTI is working with the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and KPMG in Thailand to help companies raise funds through the LiVE Exchange platform. "We set up a market for SMEs and startups called LiVE Exchange as a new fundraising channel for entrepreneurs. The FTI expects more than 100 SMEs and startups will take part in fundraising via the new platform this year. Some 80% of 13,000 entrepreneurs who are members of the FTI are operators of SMEs and startups, said Supant Mongkolsuthree, chairman of the FTI.

CIMBT bullish on secondary marketCIMB Thai Bank (CIMBT) aims to achieve a 30% growth rate in corporate bond trading in the secondary market next year. Trading volume in the corporate bond secondary market has been rising and the bank's market share of transactions has been increasing as well. CIMBT moved into this segment several years ago and positioned itself as the market leader for secondary bond trade by individual investors, said CIMBT executive vice-president Bhudinan Sethanandha. In 2020, total corporate bond trading in the secondary market stood at 21 billion baht and CIMBT's market share was more than 40%. CIMBT, whose parent is based in Malaysia, started to offer corporate bonds in the secondary market from 2016.

Aukus pact raises geopolitical tensionsIn less than a month, the trilateral security partnership among Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom (Aukus) has stolen the thunder from other geostrategic schemes that have been around for over a decade. Despite its contentious issues and tensions with China, India's congenital autonomy precludes being roped into the Australia-America axis against Beijing. Krabi jabs grease wheels to reopeningThe Public Health Ministry has distributed another 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Krabi to speed up its campaign to cover 70% of local citizens so the province can be reopened to tourists. Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said they would be sent to all areas that have not already reopened. Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai and Railay Beach have already started welcoming tourists and they are not connected with the Phuket Sandbox. Travellers to these island destinations must observe mandatory health measures such as having two jabs, showing a negative RT-PCR test and following guidelines. Ms Traisuree said Mr Anutin and other officers would visit Krabi and Phang Nga to check on vaccination targets before reopening.

The SET Index is projected to continue rising to 1,816 points next year, said Therdsak Thaveeteeratham, executive vice-president of ASPS. For external factors, investors should monitor global concerns over China Evergrande Group's debt default and the Federal Reserve's decision on the tapering of its quantitative easing, he said. ASPS expects the Thai economy in the third quarter this year to contract by 5.3% year-on-year before starting a recovery in the fourth quarter from the gradual easing of lockdown measures, an increase in economic activities, and the government's upcoming economic stimulus packages. The first group includes stocks expected to benefit from the restart of the economy, while the second includes stocks expected to benefit from the restructuring of the SET50 and SET100 indices," he said.

Exports of lifestyle products upThai lifestyle product shipments are expected to grow healthily by 13.4% this year to 363 billion baht, driven by the economic recovery of trading partners and exporters' adjustment to sell their products through online and online business matching. Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, director-general of the International Trade Promotion Department, said with economies in major export markets having gradually recovered, Thai lifestyle and fashion product exports increased by 15% to 24 billion baht in the first eight months of this year. Thai AirAsia (TAA) is eyeing a full rebound of domestic capacity in the fourth quarter after seeing early signs of improvement. "The airline used 30 aircraft for full domestic capacity last November and December thanks to the boom in domestic tourism," Mr Santisuk said. "We are hopeful that domestic capacity could reach its peak in December and next January." Thai AirAsia aims to carry 4 million passengers this year, compared to 9.49 million last year and 22 million prior to the pandemic.
