It would have been inconceivable to imagine Raila Odinga, the famed father of democracy, attacking a United States envoy for applauding the conduct of a general election in Kenya. Raila’s criticism of Ambassador Meg Whitman for endorsing last year’s elections as “the freest, fairest and most credible” has divided many but likely surprised few. Raila has accused Washington of pursuing business interests at the expense of Kenya’s democracy, even claiming that the US “installed” President William Ruto as Head of State. The former Washington Times editor turned diplomat titled his memoirs: Rogue Ambassador: An African Memoir, after a stint in Nairobi in the 1990s.
