The Government is still hoping to cut workers’ taxes in the budget despite fears that the war in the Middle East will lead to spiralling prices, Tánaiste and finance minister Simon Harris has said. Petrol and diesel prices have spiralled in recent weeks, with the cost of home heating oil also rising dramatically. Mr Harris told the Irish Examiner that the Government is examining a range of options that could be unveiled if the situation deteriorates. “We are now preparing a range of possible measures that could be deployed — could — in a variety of alternative scenarios. Speaking to reporters at Trafalgar Square, Mr Harris confirmed that the Government will fast-track plans to give the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) additional powers.
